Fantasy Football Mock Draft: Superflex, Half-PPR, Early Pick (2023)

Fantasy Football Mock Draft: Superflex, Half-PPR, Early Pick (2023)

Home leagues are just different. No matter how much you practice, someone in your home league can always throw a wrench in the mix of your draft. You can do mock draft after mock draft and still be surprised when something crazy happens at 1.01. I did a similar mock in July, picking third, so let’s do that again this month and see what may have changed. Turns out, it changed in a big way at that 1.01 pick this time.

As a friendly reminder, you can complete mock drafts just like this extremely swiftly and hassle-free by using the completely complimentary of our mock draft simulator.

Fantasy Football Mock Draft: Superflex, Half-PPR

First Round Selection

1.03: Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC)

You’re reading this correctly: Mahomes was not the first overall pick in a SuperFlex draft. I decided to draft against the FantasyPros team, and for some reason, the bot representing Joe Pisapia drafted Ja’Marr Chase 1.01 overall. Then Josh Allen went at 1.02, leaving Mahomes to me at 1.03. As unlikely as this is, it’s still possible to happen in your league, whether you believe it or not. Obviously, I had to grab him here though, so on to the next turn.

Second and Third-Round Turn

2.10: CeeDee Lamb (WR – DAL)
3.03: Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DET)

This mock only had two WR slots, but I honestly couldn’t draft an RB with either of these picks the way things went. I was considering Jacobs or Taylor at 2.10, but Lamb is my WR4 behind Chase, Jefferson, and Kupp this year, so that was a steal to me. Once both Jacobs and Taylor went, I felt like there was a tier break at RB, but another stud WR was still available in St. Brown.

I generally prefer going RB-heavy in my real drafts, but I felt like trying something different in this mock, given the values. Jacobs and Taylor have question marks with their contracts, and I think the RB group is pretty deep this year. On the other hand, there are only really 30 or so WRs that I would like to start, so I’m trying something new, and we will see how it works.

Fourth through Seventh Picks

4.10: Tua Tagovailoa (QB – MIA)
5.03: Miles Sanders (RB – PHI)
6.10: Alexander Mattison (RB – MIN)
7.03: Tyler Lockett (WR – SEA)

In a 2QB or SuperFlex league, everything runs through your quarterbacks. However, after the QB-heavy start, it felt like the draft pivoted away from them. A lot of RBs seemed to fly off the board after my third-round pick. Between 3.03 and 4.10, eight running backs were taken. This left me with a decision: do I grab an RB and keep the run going, or zig while they all zag?

I decided to zip and take Tua as my QB2 rather than finally grab my first running back. I think he has a top-ten upside, with Tyreek and Waddle catching his passes. Felt like a steal in the fourth round, if I’m being honest. I was getting worried about RB, so I would have to address that soon.

After the short turn, I take my RB1 in Sanders. He’s in that late RB2 range, but I think he could be a solid producer at a position with a lot of talent. Another long gap leaves me looking at some pretty bleak options, but I select Mattison as my RB2. I know I’m going to have to hit RBs later, but I don’t mind these as my solid two. I think followed that up by taking Lockett as my Flex starter at 7.03. My team is coming together pretty nicely so far. Now I just need some depth!

Middle-Round Flex Candidates

8.10: George Kittle (TE – SF)
9.03: George Pickens (WR – PIT)
10.10: Brian Robinson (RB – WAS)
11.03: Zach Charbonnet (RB – SEA)
12.10: Ezekiel Elliott (RB – NE)
13.03: Tyler Boyd (WR – CIN)

I noticed that my team was still missing a TE, and since it’s not a TE premium league, I don’t mind waiting on the position. That being said, seeing Kittle was still available at 8.10 felt like a mistake was made. I had to take him there. I followed him up by taking the potential WR1 on the Steelers in Pickens, who I think is in for a big second season as well.

On the 10-11 turn, I grabbed two more RBs, both of whom could be flex candidates for me as the season goes along. Robinson and Charbonnet are both slated to be on full-time committees, but if an injury were to happen to their counterpart, they could see tremendous upside. It also helps to have players like that available for trade in a league like this, where there are so many different draft strategies at play.

My next turn was focused on two vets that I think could surprise this year: Zeke and Boyd. This mock was done on the day that Zeke signed, so I think his ADP is a little low as drafters catch up to reality. Boyd is just someone I love taking in PPR leagues because he’s a trusted producer on a great offense. In these rounds, that’s all I’m really looking for.

Late Round Fliers

14.10: Jordan Love (QB – GB)
15.03: Tyler Higbee (TE – LAR)
16.10: Chase Brown (RB – CIN)
17.03: Isaiah Hodgins (WR – NYG)
18.10: Zack Moss (RB – IND)

Pretty much every pick from 14 on is a true flier, picked solely for their upside. In SF leagues, you need a solid QB3 to get through byes, and I think Love is solid enough to get that job done. As much as I love Kittle, Higbee could be in for a huge year on a depleted Rams offense. These are just two players to fill in or flex if needed that are perfect for my bench.

Next, I go back to the RB well with Brown because someone has to spell Mixon eventually, and Hodgins in New York. Last but not least, I selected Moss in RB on the off chance that Taylor either sits or gets injured, and Moss can step up in the back half of the year once he returns from his own injury.

Final Thoughts

Overall I really ended up liking the balance I was able to build in this mock. Getting Mahomes third overall may not happen in your league, but if it does, you’ll be sitting pretty. The only pick I regretted was taking Tua instead of Breece Hall in the fourth. I probably could have waited a little longer to grab my QB2 and gotten similar production. Or Tua might have fallen to me in the 5th too. Either way, I loved this team, and so did the mock simulator, which graded it a 95 out of 100 and the best in the mock. It’s a shame it’s not a real team, but the practice alone was worth it for me.
