NFL Injury Updates & Fantasy Football Impact (Week 9)

NFL Injury Updates & Fantasy Football Impact (Week 9)

We are officially more than halfway through the NFL regular season, a feat that seemingly occurred within the blink of an eye.

For fantasy football season-long leagues, standings are rounding into form, and most managers should know where they sit amongst their pack. The never-ending laundry list of injuries continues to pile up, and this past week’s affairs were no more forgiving than usual.

There were a number of fantasy-relevant players that went down during the first week of November. Their impacts are noted below.

NFL Injury Updates & Fantasy Football Impact

Daniel Jones (QB – NYG)

The New York Giants’ QB Daniel Jones has officially entered the unluckiest tier of players when it comes to injury. In just his first game back since being out with a lingering neck issue, Jones promptly tore his ACL against the Raiders on Sunday afternoon. New York’s season had already essentially been in the gutter even before this news, but the deal was more than sealed following this fate. Jones will now have to set his sights on the beginning of the 2024 season, as he will be rehabbing from now until then.

Fantasy Impact: In terms of fantasy football, not much can go worse for New York or their relevant players. With backup QB Tommy DeVito at the helm, there is not a single player that can be started with any sort of confidence. This type of move relegates RB Saquon Barkley to fringe RB2/RB3 status at best, as defenses zero in on him. There are also no start-worthy receivers to be had in this offense. Head coach Brian Daboll will almost certainly be fighting for his job for the remainder of the 2023 campaign following this 2-7 start.

Dallas Goedert (TE – PHI)

A rare, fantasy-relevant tight end, Dallas Goedert suffered some misfortune on Sunday against Dallas, fracturing his right forearm following a sideline catch. He is reportedly, at best, facing a four-week recovery timeline following imminent surgery. The 28-year-old had been operating as a top-10 fantasy TE across the first nine weeks of the season.

Fantasy Impact: Goedert’s absence will undoubtedly be a major blow to his fantasy managers, who are losing one of the more productive tight ends in the NFL. As for Philadelphia, they currently have Jack Stoll listed as their TE2, with Albert Okwuegbunam also available as a depth option. Neither of those players is a seemingly enticing option, and it is more likely that Goedert’s vacated work simply gets distributed across the receiver corps. The result should be a slight bump in value for both A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith as long as their starting tight end remains sidelined. Maybe we will see a bit more action from veteran WR Julio Jones, too.

Cam Akers (RB – MIN)

A brutal blow for the Viking’s RB2, Cam Akers suffered the second torn Achilles of his career in a Minnesota win over Atlanta on Sunday. Out for the season, Akers will likely be fighting for his career, as he attempts to overcome the dreaded injury for a second time.

Fantasy Impact: Akers had slowly been ramping up and had looked somewhat decent for the Vikings since being traded to them from Los Angeles. He had posted an 11-138-1 line and also hauled in 11 of 12 targets for an additional 70 yards. Given his absence, Ty Chandler will likely step right back into the RB2 role behind Alexander Mattison moving forward. Despite injury news like this never being truly “good” for anyone, this news should resolidify Mattison as close to a true workhorse back going forward where he should return RB2 numbers more often than not.

Additional Notes:

  • Dolphins’ WR Jaylen Waddle got banged up again against the Chiefs in Sunday morning’s Germany game, but he returned after a short absence and closed it out. The Dolphins will be on bye in Week 10, giving him ample time to heal up fully.
  • Vikings’ superstar WR Justin Jefferson will have a chance to return from IR in Week 10 against the Saints. His practice status needs to be closely monitored by his managers this week.
  • Bears’ QB Justin Fields could also return in Week 10 against Carolina. Chicago faces the Panthers on Thursday Night Football, so he will need to ramp up his practice reps in the next day or two to be able to give it a go.
  • Falcons’ WR Drake London hopes to be available in Week 10 after he missed Atlanta’s Week 9 affair with a groin injury. His practice status needs to be watched throughout the week.
