Smash Spots
Joe Ryan (SP – MIN) vs. PIT
Joe Ryan has allowed a combined one earned run across 13 innings in his last two starts, putting his season-long numbers at a 2.75 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Look for another strong outing against the Pirates, who have one of the worst lineups in baseball. Expect to see six innings with a high strikeout ceiling here.
Framber Valdez (SP – HOU) vs. TEX
Framber Valdez hasn’t allowed an earned run in each of his last two outings. The crafty lefty is having yet another strong season, as highlighted by a 2.72 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Up next is a matchup at home against the Rangers, who have struggled against left-handed starters all year long.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (SP – LAD) @ MIL
In a year where the Dodgers have been plagued by injuries to pitchers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been huge. The second-year righty has taken the next step to becoming an ace, with a 2.51 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. Next on the schedule is a road start in a pitcher-friendly environment against the Brewers.
Risky Starts
Logan Webb (SP – SF) vs. LAD
Logan Webb is having a terrific season, but it’s hard to trust him against the Dodgers. The good news is that this start is at home, where Webb has a 1.52 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Perhaps Webb can still go six innings while limiting the damage against this prolific offense, but you have to temper your expectations here.
Freddy Peralta (SP – MIL) vs. LAD
Like Webb, Freddy Peralta has a tough matchup against the Dodgers, but at least it’s at home, where the Brewers righty has registered a 1.76 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. But this is a pitcher who has struggled with command at times, while the Dodgers are a team that can work up the pitch count and draw walks.
MacKenzie Gore (SP – WSH) @ STL
MacKenzie Gore is in the middle of a breakout season, but he’s starting to hit a wall. In Gore’s last three starts, he’s allowed a combined eight earned runs across 17 innings, featuring a mediocre 12:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. You can’t feel too comfortable with Gore given these recent command issues, even against the Cardinals.
Two-Start Pitchers
Shane Baz (SP – TB) @ DET, @ BOS
Shane Baz appears to be turning the corner, allowing only three runs in his last two starts. The Rays righty has gone seven or more innings in these two outings, combining for 20 strikeouts in 15 frames. It’s the perfect time for a two-start week, so make sure to ride the wave with Baz while he’s in a rhythm.
Yusei Kikuchi (SP – LAA) vs. TEX, vs. ARI
Yusei Kikuchi is another pitcher who has found his groove, racking up 38 strikeouts in 25.1 innings in his last four starts. During this stretch, Kikuchi has found his command, issuing only five walks. The former Astro is starting to look like he did in the second half of last season, so fire him up during a two-start week.
Brayan Bello (SP – BOS) vs. COL, vs. TB
Brayan Bello has underwhelming numbers on the year — 3.42 ERA and 1.38 WHIP — but I like riding with him for this two-step because he gets a home start against the worst offense in MLB, the Rockies. While the Rays start is a lot tougher, especially with how red-hot they’ve been, I’m willing to take a shot on him for his matchup against the Rockies.
Top Streamers
Brady Singer (SP – CIN) vs. MIA, vs. COL
Like Bello, Brady Singer’s numbers don’t jump out at you (4.36 ERA, 1.34 WHIP), but he’s got a great chance at securing two wins against the Marlins and Rockies. This is an innings-eater who should be able to turn in at least one quality start given this favorable schedule.
Brandon Walter (SP – HOU) vs. CLE
Brandon Walter has been highly impressive for the Astros, registering a 30:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 3.34 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. If he’s still available in your league, make sure to pick him up for this exploitable matchup against a Guardians offense that struggles versus lefties.
Chase Burns (SP – CIN) vs. COL
Chase Burns is a top prospect who got shelled in his last start, but reports indicate he was tipping his pitches in that outing against the Red Sox. Expect this flamethrower to get back on track against an abysmal Rockies lineup. There’s a chance Burns was dropped in your league after that blowup start. Pick him up off the waiver wire if that’s the case.
