Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamers & Waiver Wire Pickups
All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN leagues.
Justin Fields (NYJ) vs. Cleveland Browns (41.9% Rostered)
Head coach Aaron Glenn hasn’t named a starter for Sunday’s matchup against the Browns. However, it seems unlikely that Tyrod Taylor (1.1% rostered) will start after Fields’ performance in the Week 8 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The veteran completed 65.6% of his pass attempts for 244 yards, a touchdown, and 11 rushing attempts for 31 yards against the Bengals, scoring 20.9 fantasy points, his highest total since Week 5. Furthermore, Fields has been an appealing fantasy option in the five games he’s finished, averaging 21.7 fantasy points per contest.
If the Jets start Taylor against Cincinnati, the veteran is also a solid streaming option. He had two passing touchdowns and 16.7 fantasy points in his lone start this season. Meanwhile, the Browns have surrendered 226.5 passing yards, 1.5 touchdowns, and 14.8 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks over their past four matchups, allowing at least 235 yards and 14.7 fantasy points in all but one outing. Furthermore, Cleveland struggled to keep Drake Maye in the pocket in their last game, giving up 50 rushing yards on seven attempts.
Sam Darnold (SEA) vs. Arizona Cardinals (41.9% Rostered)
Hopefully, fantasy players listened last week and streamed Darnold off the waiver wire against the Washington Commanders. The former USC star was outstanding, completing 87.5% of his 24 pass attempts for 330 yards, four touchdowns, and 27.2 fantasy points, setting season highs in multiple categories. Furthermore, he has been an excellent streaming option, averaging 273.2 passing yards, 2.3 touchdowns, and 19.4 fantasy points per game since Week 2, totaling 16.1 or more in all but one contest. More importantly, the veteran has a solid fantasy matchup on Sunday.
Darnold played well in the Week 4 win over the Cardinals. The veteran quarterback had only one passing touchdown on 26 attempts against the division rivals. Yet, he finished with 242 passing yards and 16.1 fantasy points. More importantly, Arizona has struggled against capable passing attacks. They surrendered 249 passing yards, 1.6 touchdowns, and 17.3 fantasy points per game to Bryce Young, Mac Jones, Darnold, Daniel Jones, and Jordan Love before facing Dak Prescott on Monday night. Expect the former USC star to keep up his MVP-type play.
Michael Penix Jr. (ATL) vs. Indianapolis Colts (12.1% Rostered)
Unfortunately, most fantasy players didn’t start Penix in Week 9. He was productive against a talented New England Patriots defense, totaling 221 passing yards and 22.7 fantasy points. Furthermore, Penix had a career-high three passing touchdowns against the Patriots despite getting little help from anyone but Drake London, who had all three scores. While he has had some poor performances, Penix has played well lately, averaging 256.3 passing yards, 1.8 touchdowns, and 17.1 fantasy points per contest over his past four outings, totaling 18.7 or more in half the games.
Meanwhile, Penix has a solid matchup on Sunday against the Colts. Last week, Aaron Rodgers had a quiet performance against Indianapolis, completing 71.4% of his pass attempts for 203 yards, a touchdown, and 12.1 fantasy points. However, they had struggled to slow competent passing attacks this season. The Colts have surrendered 330.3 passing yards, 2.8 touchdowns, and 24.1 fantasy points per game to Bo Nix, Matthew Stafford, Jacoby Brissett, and Justin Herbert, allowing at least two touchdowns and 20.2 fantasy points in every matchup. Penix could have another three-touchdown performance.
Marcus Mariota (WAS) vs. Detroit Lions (5.2% Rostered)
Sadly, Jayden Daniels suffered an all-but-guaranteed season-ending elbow injury Sunday night, putting Mariota in line to start for the rest of the year. The veteran quarterback has been a serviceable fantasy option when under center for the Commanders. He has completed 66.7% of his pass attempts for 192 yards, 1.3 touchdowns, and 16 fantasy points per game in his three starts, totaling 16.2 or more twice. Furthermore, Mariota has been a factor in the run game, averaging 4.9 fantasy points per contest on the ground as the team’s starting quarterback.
More importantly, the veteran has a fantasy-friendly matchup on Sunday against the Lions. Not only will Washington have to chase points against an elite Detroit offense, but Mariota should have no trouble against the Lions’ defense. They’ve surrendered 221.6 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 17.9 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, allowing 18.7 or more in 71.4% of their matchups since Week 1. Last week, J.J. McCarthy had two passing touchdowns, a rushing score, and 18.9 fantasy points against the division rivals in his third career start.
