Fantasy Baseball Pitcher Rankings: Week 24 (2024)

Welcome to the FantasyPros Week 24 starting pitcher rankings for 2024. On Fridays, we view the upcoming week and rank starting pitchers based on their talent and the team they play against. These rankings are for Monday, September 9 through Sunday, September 15.

These rankings use expert consensus rankings (ECR) as a starting point. Matchup information can be found on the helpful Pitcher Planner’s resource for probable pitchers.

As usual, remember that some starts are projected over a week in advance. Dates can change due to rain, injuries or anything else. Two-start weeks often end up as one-start weeks.

Best Matchups

  • Framber Valdez would be a Cy Young frontrunner if he pitched like this all year. Valdez has 78 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA over 65 innings since the end of June. He’s been amazing after some start-of-year difficulties alongside his fellow Astros. I love Valdez against the 58-81 Angels.
  • Pablo Lopez might be making up for a horrible start to the year. Maybe. Lopez has a 2.16 ERA after the All-Star break, despite having a 4.05 ERA overall in 2024. Advanced stats suggested the Twins ace was getting unlucky this year, and he is finally having some positive regression. Start Lopez with confidence against the horrid Angels.
  • Jose Berrios is a new man on the mound. His past five games have been incredible. Each has been a quality start, allowing just six runs and striking out 31 across 34.2 innings. A hot streak counts now more than ever. Start the Blue Jay pitcher against the mediocre Cardinals this week.

Unfavorable Matchups

  • Dylan Cease doesn’t look the same after his flashy first half. He has a 4.61 ERA from the start of August to now and his strikeout numbers have decreased. Even worse, Cease has to play a semi-decent team in the Giants. Start the Padre, with caution. Consider benching Cease in playoff matchups with many other pitching options.
  • Logan Webb has been off-and-on all year. Right now, he’s off. The Giant has had dominant stretches, but they always seem to be followed by, let’s say, not dominant stretches. Webb has allowed 10 runs over his last 11 innings pitched in two starts. We’ve seen worse, but we’ve certainly seen better. Cautious managers should bench Webb for a tough Padres matchup.
  • Clarke Schmidt is coming off of injury. Hooray. The Yankee has a 2.52 ERA and 1.14 WHIP this year. He had a great April and May. The problem is, he hasn’t pitched since 5/26. Schmidt is set to be activated on Saturday 9/7 to start against the Cubs. If he does well, start him with confidence against the Red Sox. If Schmidt pitches poorly, sit him.
