Sunday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings (6/14)

PLAYER DraftKings Salary FanDuel Salary
Cristopher Sanchez $11,600 $11,600
Gavin Williams $9,300 $10,500
Andrew Abbott $6,500 $8,300
  • The premiere pitching matchup of the day sees Cristopher Sanchez going head-to-head with Kyle Harrison. Both pitchers are interesting options, but you have to favor Sanchez. He leads the league in FIP, and his 30.1% strikeout rate ranks second behind only Jacob Misiorowski.
  • Gavin Williams doesn’t quite have the consistency of the top pitchers in the game, but his 28.7% strikeout rate is in the top 10 among qualified starters. His matchup today is against a Tigers team that has struck out 22.7% of the time against right-handed pitchers.
  • It’s hard to figure out how he is doing it, but Andrew Abbott is in the midst of a nice little streak. Over his last eight starts, he has a 2.53. It’s a bit luck-driven, as his FIP in that same span is 4.63. However, if you are playing on FanDuel, he’s scored at least 24 points in each of those games.

Suggested Lineup Stacks

New York Yankees Projected Lineup (6/14)

POS PLAYER DraftKings Salary FanDuel Salary
1B/C Ben Rice $6,000 $4,200
OF Jasson Dominguez $3,700 $2,600
1B Paul Goldschmidt $4,500 $3,200
OF/1B Cody Bellinger $4,800 $3,400
2B/3B Jazz Chisholm Jr. $4,500 $3,200
2B/3B/OF Amed Rosario $3,800 $2,700
OF/SS/2B/3B Jose Caballero $3,200 $2,800
SS Anthony Volpe $3,700 $3,o00
C Ali Sanchez $2,000 $2,200
  • Patrick Corbin has the unenviable task of pitching against the New York Yankees today. No team in baseball has a higher team OPS against left-handed pitchers like Corbin. His ERA is 4.55, which is essentially in line with his FIP, but his expected ERA is over a run higher at 5.61.
  • In MLB DFS, we typically try to avoid left-handed batters against left-handed pitchers. Even the Yankees were trying to do that earlier in the season when they decided to platoon Ben Rice. In hindsight, that was not a good choice. Rice now has five home runs in just 71 at-bats against left-handed pitchers for a .912 OPS.
  • Paul Goldschmidt is back to crushing left-handed pitchers to the tune of a 1.276 OPS. That’s the best mark in the league amongst qualified batters versus left-handed pitchers. For his career against Corbin, he has gone 8-for-19 with a pair of home runs in their most recent last two games.
  • Amed Rosario‘s career has mostly been defined by having most of his success come against left-handed pitchers. His career OPS against lefties is .797, which is over 100 points higher than it is against right-handed pitchers. This season, Rosario has been almost equally capable against right-handed pitchers, with three home runs against both right-handed and left-handed pitchers.

Seattle Mariners Projected Lineup (6/14)

POS PLAYER DraftKings Salary FanDuel Salary
2B/SS Cole Young $3,500 $2,900
OF Julio Rodriguez $5,600 $3,500
1B Josh Naylor $5,100 $3,100
OF Randy Arozarena $5,400 $3,700
OF/1B Luke Raley $4,300 $2,900
OF Dominic Canzone $3,400 $2,700
3B/2B/SS/OF Miles Mastrobuoni $2,500 $2,200
C Jhonny Pereda $3,100 $2,400
3B/SS Colt Emerson $4,200 $3,100
  • Right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas is going to take on the Seattle Mariners today. Mikolas has a 5.90 ERA with a 4.98 expected ERA and 5.63 FIP. Meanwhile, the Mariners have been a top-five team in both OPS and ISO against righties this season.
  • After a tough start in March and April, Josh Naylor has been his usual elite self in May and June. He hit .296 in May, but only had four extra-base hits for a .352 slugging rate. He’s found his power stroke in June with five extra-base hits already to give him a .537 slugging rate this month.
  • The two batters that you need to capitalize on early in the game versus right-handed pitchers are Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone. If the Nationals sub in a left-handed pitcher, they will be subbed out, but they can do serious damage against righties. Raley has an .879 OPS against righties, and Canzone has an .897 OPS.
  • It’s still a very small sample size for the rookie, but Colt Emerson has performed better against right-handed pitchers than left-handed pitchers. He has eight extra-base hits, including three home runs, against righties for a .924 OPS. Against lefties, he has a pair of extra-base hits for a .661 OPS.

Core Studs

POS PLAYER DraftKings Salary FanDuel Salary
1B Pete Alonso $5,200 $3,500
3B Austin Riley $4,000 $2,900
3B/SS Bo Bichette $3,900 $2,800
  • It’s not surprising to see that Pete Alonso has success against a starting pitcher, but that’s especially true against Walker Buehler. Alonso has faced Buehler 17 times in his career, and he has five hits. Four of those five hits have been home runs.
  • Another batter who has success against his opposing starting pitcher today is Austin Riley. He’s facing Freddy Peralta. Riley has gone 7-for-16 in his career against Peralta with three extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.
  • It’s a small sample, but Bo Bichette is also seemingly finding comfort in June. It’s only the 14th of the month, but he already has as many extra-base hits as he did in March and April combined, and more than he had in May. Bichette has at least one extra-base hit in his last three games.

Value Plays/Punts

POS PLAYER DraftKings Salary FanDuel Salary
OF Lars Nootbaar $3,600 $3,200
OF/1B Jac Caglianone $3,400 $2,900
OF Braden Montgomery $3,100 $2,800
  • Lars Nootbaar has started six out of eight games since returning, with both games he sat out coming against left-handed starting pitchers. Nootbaar already has four extra bases, including a pair of home runs.
  • Jac Caglianone has a matchup against Spencer Arrighetti. His ERA indicators suggest regression will likely hit soon. Caglianone has already posted six games with multiple hits in June.
  • Braden Montgomery couldn’t have had a better debut with a walk-off home run in his first appearance. While he hasn’t been able to hit another home run since, he does have a pair of doubles in only four games.

Sunday’s Top 3 Underdog Player Props

Cristopher Sanchez (SP – PHI): 7.5 Strikeouts — Higher

It’s a big strikeout number, but Cristopher Sanchez can get there. He’s cleared seven strikeouts in his last three games and five of his last seven. He and Jacob Misiorowski are the only two qualified pitchers with strikeout rates over 30%.

Shohei Ohtani (DH – LAD): 2.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs — Higher

We’re going straight to the top and taking Shohei Ohtani to exceed 2.5 combined hits + runs + RBIs. He’s gone over that mark in his last six games and nine out of 10 games since the start of June.

In that span, Ohtani is hitting .436 with an .872 slugging rate. He can clear this mark with a single swing of the bat.

Nathan Eovaldi (SP – TEX): 4.5 Strikeouts  — Higher

Nathan Eovaldi‘s line of 4.5 strikeouts is lower than you’d expect. He’s taking on a Red Sox team that strikes out about 22% of the time, so it’s not a bad matchup.

Eovaldi himself has at least six strikeouts in six of his last seven games. The game he missed was his most recent one, when he struck out only three.
