2020 FantasyProjections: Notable Guys On New Teams (Fantasy Football)

2020 FantasyProjections: Notable Guys On New Teams (Fantasy Football)

I’ve gotten quite a few questions the past couple of months about what I will be writing on during the NFL season. My co-host on The FantasyPros Football Podcast, Mike Tagliere, obviously has The Primer and it’s an incredibly valuable asset during the season.

Well, this year, I will be writing an article every week that will give you a breakdown of every fantasy relevant player on every team and my projected stats for them in the upcoming matchup. I’ll be utilizing several resources at my disposal to make these as accurate as possible in hopes of helping you construct the best possible fantasy lineup.

With that being said, I wanted to spend the next couple of weeks giving you a preview into my season-long projections and how I construct my rankings. Each day, you’ll find a different category highlighting ten players and a brief summary on my thoughts for them in 2020. If you’ve missed the previous two articles in this series, you can find the links for those below.

Let’s get right to it!

Jordan Howard, Miami Dolphins

___

Howard’s moving to the Dolphins after stints with the Bears and Eagles, which presents a drop-off in terms of the offensive line play. The Dolphins OL was atrocious last season, but they’ve revamped the unit with new starters across the board. While it’s going to take some time for them to gel as a unit, Howard should receive plenty of work in this backfield as the lead option. This team should be in the red zone much more than they were in 2019 and Howard has proven that he has a nose for the end zone. While it’s unlikely that Howard moves into top-20 consideration this season at any point, he’s an absolute steal in drafts right now as the RB32 off the board.

Melvin Gordon, Denver Broncos

___

Gordon appears set to split this backfield with Phillip Lindsay this season, which is going to limit his overall ceiling. Gordon has the talent to be a top-5 fantasy back, provided he gets the majority of the workload, but that seems unlikely to happen this season. While I am expecting Gordon to be the leader in terms of touches in this Broncos backfield, Lindsay’s not going to be far behind him. Gordon should see enough work to finish just inside the top-24 this season.

David Johnson, Houston Texans

___

Johnson looked like he was on his way out of the NFL last season with the way he was playing. It seemed his injuries had caught up to him, but he’s going to be given another chance here in Houston to prove that he can still be an effective fantasy running back. With that being said, Duke Johnson‘s presence in this backfield prevents David from seeing the workload in the passing game that’s going to elevate him into a top-20 finish at the season’s end. Johnson’s not exactly an efficient runner in between the tackles and he relies heavily on the receiving work to sustain fantasy success. Without the guarantee, I’m staying away from Johnson in 2020. He falls in at RB28 in my Half PPR rankings.

Todd Gurley, Atlanta Falcons

219 897 6 57 397 2 205.88

___

Gurley’s in one of the best situations for a RB changing teams in 2020. This offense should be high-powered and explosive, but the question with Gurley is about his health. Is he going to be able to withstand the amount of touches that the Falcons need to give him this season? If he doesn’t, they only have Brian Hill, Qadree Ollison, and Ito Smith behind him, which is not exactly a great spot to be in. Gurley needs to remain healthy the entire season for the Falcons to have success, which makes me believe that they’re not going to give him 18-20 touches per game. With these numbers, Gurley lands at RB16 in my Half PPR rankings.

Robby Anderson, Carolina Panthers

RECEPTIONS REC YDS TDs FPTS
68 950 5 158.98

___

Anderson is moving from Adam Gase and the New York Jets offense to reunite with Matt Rhule in Carolina. This offense is going to have to pass the ball a ton again in 2020, which means plenty of opportunities for the big-play threat. However, Anderson is more than just a deep shot receiver and he should be the perfect compliment to DJ Moore in this offense. I’m projecting Anderson to be second on this team in terms of targets, which means that he’s drastically going to outperform where he’s being drafted right now. Anderson slides in at WR35 in my Half PPR rankings.

DeAndre Hopkins, Arizona Cardinals

RECEPTIONS REC YDS TDs FPTS

___

Hopkins never should have been traded from the Houston Texans. That’s a pretty obvious thing to state, especially when you factor in what the Texans gave up for him, but it happened. Now, Nuk joins a talented WR corps that is going to prevent him from seeing the type of target share that he was used to seeing in Houston. With Larry Fitzgerald still around and Christian Kirk continuing to progress, 150 targets just isn’t a realistic expectation for Hopkins this season. With that being said, Hopkins should be around the 120-130 target range and should see enough work to be a back-end WR1.

Brandin Cooks, Houston Texans

RECEPTIONS REC YDS TDs FPTS
70 941 6 164.91

___

If Cooks is healthy, he should be the number one WR in this new-look Texans receiving corps. Fuller’s excellent in plus matchups, but doesn’t have the top-end talent or durability to be an established WR1 on a NFL team. He’s a fantastic WR2, but Cooks has proven that he can be a WR1 on multiple occasions. Watson will spread the ball around now between Fuller, Cooks, and Randall Cobb, but I’m projecting Cooks to be the lead guy. With all that being said, Cooks slides in at WR33 with these projections.

Stefon Diggs, Buffalo Bills

RECEPTIONS REC YDS TDs FPTS
72 970 6 168.96

___

Diggs has the talent to be a top-5 fantasy football WR if he received the type of volume that some of the other options receive. However, he’s going from a low-passing volume attack to a very similar style offense in Buffalo. Diggs should be the WR1 on this Bills team in terms of targets, but Cole Beasley and John Brown are still going to be heavily involved. It’s unlikely that we see Diggs vault into the top-20 at the position unless something were to happen to one of the other receiving options on this team. With these projections, Diggs falls to WR28.

Hayden Hurst, Atlanta Falcons

RECEPTIONS REC YDS TDs FPTS
73 783 6 150.91

___

Hurst was drafted in the first round to be a playmaker in the NFL. Unfortunately for him, the Ravens found a true gem in the third round of the same draft in Mark Andrews. Now, Hurst is a member of the Atlanta Falcons, whic should be one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL this season. Hurst should be a focal point of this offense right away and could easily turn into 2020’s best value pick. Hurst finishes as a top-5 option at the TE position this season with these projections.

Teddy Bridgewater, Carolina Panthers

ATT COMP PASS YDS TDs INTs RUSH ATT RUSH YDS TDs FPTS
616 394 4336 22 13 37 94 0 244.78

___

Bridgewater’s comeback story is truly incredible and he now finds himself as the starting QB for an offense that features several playmakers. While the yardage total may seem a bit optimistic for a QB like Bridgewater, he’s never had a receiving option like Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield that will rack up the passing yardage totals for him. Even with those numbers though, this offense isn’t going to be high-powered enough to put up crazy Passing TD totals. Bridgewater falls outside of the top-24 at the QB position with these projections.
