Early Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 5 (2020 Fantasy Football)

Early Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 5 (2020 Fantasy Football)

Good evening, folks! We’ve made it through the bulk of Week 4 action, and it’s that most wonderful time of the evening once again. Sunday night gives fantasy owners time to reflect on the week’s triumphs or losses and take stock of their roster heading into the new week. It’s a time for reflection and a time to assess potential waiver wire options. Each week, I’ll be highlighting a handful of low-rostered options you should consider when making waiver wire claims. Each player’s upcoming three-game schedule will be noted, including strength of matchup. This is particularly helpful if you need a streaming option or a temporary replacement to get you through the tough times.

Week 4 featured a ton of high-scoring contests, some great rookie QB showings, a ridiculously-high scoring showdown between the Browns and Cowboys, and another heartbreaking Texans loss. This week’s group of waiver wire adds is a little thinner than what we’ve had in past weeks, though there are still some great moves to make. Despite seemingly serious injuries to both Nick Chubb and Austin Ekeler, their backups (Kareem Hunt, Joshua Kelley) are widely owned and won’t be included here. We’re light on RBs this week, as the best pickups here are mostly speculative. However, we’ve got some great WRs and QBs who could help your team out right away. Enough talk, let’s get to the waiver wire!

Note: Most players are less than 30% rostered in Yahoo leagues.

Wide Receiver

Tim Patrick (DEN): 1% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@NE MIA KC

__________

Patrick came through for Denver on TNF, racking up a 6/113/1 receiving line on seven targets to lead the Broncos in every receiving category. Over the last two weeks, Patrick has brought in 10 receptions for 156 yards and two scores, and with Noah Fant and KJ Hamler added to the growing injury list, he could be in for an increased target share moving forward.

Laviska Shenault (JAX): 24% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@HOU DET BYE

__________

Even with three productive weeks under his belt, Shenault came into Week 4 rostered in just 24% of Yahoo leagues. That should change after his performance against Cincinnati, where the rookie went 5/86 as a receiver and added a five-yard carry. Shenault has been targeted 13 times over the last two weeks and figures to remain a key part of Jacksonville’s offensive gameplan moving forward.

Scotty Miller (TB): 16% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@CHI GB @LV

__________

Chris Godwin‘s status is still week-to-week, and Mike Evans played hobbled in Week 4 after his leg was bent back awkwardly while being tackled. Miller played a key role in the victory over the Chargers, as he absorbed five of his seven targets for 83 yards and a score – matching his receiving total from a week ago. Miller has now gone for at least 70 yards in three of four games and should stay involved for as long as Godwin is out.

Tre’Quan Smith (NO): 27% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
LAC BYE CAR

__________

Smith went 4/54/2 in Week 4, scoring his first two touchdowns of the season in New Orleans’ victory. His value will take a hit when Michael Thomas returns (as early as next week), though Smith should still be added where available.

Quarterback

Justin Herbert (LAC): 15% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@NO NYJ @MIA

__________

After two solid games to start his career, Herbert was dazzling Sunday, leading the Chargers in a shootout with Tampa Bay. He finished 10 yards shy of becoming just the second QB in NFL history to pass for 300 yards in three straight games (Joe Burrow). Herbert threw for three touchdowns with just one pick, and Los Angeles nearly got the better of Tom Brady and Co. Herbert is an excellent pickup for those in need of help at the position.

Teddy Bridgewater (CAR): 19% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@ATL CHI @NO

__________

Teddy B was big for Carolina in Week 4, going for 306 total yards and three total touchdowns in a comfortable win over the Cardinals. Next week’s matchup with Atlanta is a dream, and he’ll face the Falcons again in Week 8 after a great Week 7 date with the Saints. Bridgewater is set up nicely over the next four months and is worth an add.

Kirk Cousins (MIN): 29% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@SEA ATL BYE

__________

Aside from a poor Week 2 showing, Cousins has played solid football in three of four games, particularly as of late with the emergence of Justin Jefferson. Cousins’ next two matchups are as good as they get for quarterbacks, and he’s a strong add for those in need of QB help.

Running Back

Chase Edmonds (ARI): 34% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@NYJ @DAL SEA

__________

Edmonds scored his second touchdown of the year in Week 4, providing a useful fantasy line while Kenyan Drake struggled and exited early. Drake rushed 13 times for just 35 yards and was blanked in the receiving column, and while his injury appeared to be non-serious, his performance thus far has been concerning to say the least. Edmonds is the preferred pass-catching back in this offense and is a must-add this week in case of injury to or benching of Drake.

Travis Homer (SEA): 5% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
MIN BYE @ARI

__________

With Carlos Hyde out, Homer played backup to Chris Carson and scored a receiving touchdown in Week 4. He’s more of a deep-league add, but he could have some value if one of Carson or Hyde is injured or limited ahead of Week 5.

Justin Jackson (LAC): 5% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@NO NYJ MIA

__________

Austin Ekeler was forced out of Sunday’s matchup with Tampa Bay, leaving Joshua Kelley as the No. 1 back. Kelley wasn’t all that effective with his touches, failing to rack up any meaningful yardage and fumbling inside the 20-yard line to set up a Tampa Bay touchdown. It’s unlikely Kelley gets the bulk of the work if Ekeler is out, and Jackson could play a complimentary role moving forward.

D’Ernest Johnson (CLE): 1% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
IND @PIT @CIN

__________

Nick Chubb left the Browns’ matchup with Dallas early, and Johnson filled in with 13 carries for 95 yards. Kareem Hunt handled scoring duties, but Johnson actually out-carried him 13-11 on the day. Chubb’s status is yet unknown, but Johnson is worth a speculative add.

Tight End

Mo Alie-Cox (IND): 33% rostered

WEEK 5 WEEK 6 WEEK 7
@CLE CIN BYE

__________

MAC Daddy has been a recommended add for the last two weeks, and this might be your final chance to pick him up. He’s now rostered in 33% of Yahoo leagues, though that will surely go up significantly after he scored for a second week in a row in Week 4. His matchups over the next two weeks are great, and he should be a priority add for any team needing help at the TE position.
