Sleepers & Snoozers: Week 13 (Fantasy Football)

Sleepers & Snoozers: Week 13 (Fantasy Football)

Are you superstitious? Me neither, knock on wood.

But it is Week 13, and in many fantasy leagues, this is the final week of the regular season. It’s the second-to-last for even more. So here are two quick suggestions that are basic but often overlooked: If you’re securely in the playoffs, focus your attention on roster moves to strengthen your team for the postseason rather than streaming too much. Conversely, if you’re on the outside looking in, be aggressive! Don’t get skittish now. Run with your hunches, and cut anyone loose who you don’t believe in down the stretch.

And if things don’t work out? Well… hey, fuhgetaboutit and enjoy the holidays. Don’t mean to go all Yoda on you, but “an exact science this is not.”

SLEEPERS are defined as players normally considered Tier 3 or below who I predict will over-achieve this week. SNOOZERS are Tier 1 or 2 players who I expect to disappoint their owners.

SLEEPERS

Brett Hundley (QB – GB vs. TB)
One strong performance doesn’t make a star, but Hundley’s effort Sunday night at Pittsburgh was an attention-grabber. He finally appears to be settling into the job, though a temp job it is, and he gets the league’s worst passing-yards defense against quarterbacks, on the familiar not-quite-yet-frozen tundra.

Alex Collins (RB – BAL vs. DET)
Collins is an explosive guy, and after two months he is now finding the end zone, having scored in consecutive weeks. Plus, the Lions rank in the bottom quarter of the league in every applicable run defense stat.

Isaiah Crowell (RB – CLE @ LAC)
Although the game-flow might go awry, I like Crowell this week because he is on an uptrend (three double-figures efforts in his last four), and going against the Bolts’ defense that is 31st in scrimmage yards allowed. Also, the hype involving Josh Gordon‘s return could be a clever disguise.

Jamison Crowder (WR – WAS @ DAL)
After a hugely disappointing first eight weeks, Crowder has emerged, garnering no fewer than eight targets in four straight games. Dallas’ defense is 28th defensively against receivers.

Zay Jones (WR – BUF vs. NE)
‘Way to Make a Play, Zay!’ has been an increasingly prominent part of the attack – he scored and had 10 targets a week ago – and could see even more if the Bills end up playing from behind. New England’s pass defense bends – it’s second-to-last in yards allowed to wideouts.

Jared Cook (TE – OAK vs. NYG)
I’m going to roll out the tight-end-against-the-Giants strategy one last time. “But,” you reply, “the Giants have now gone consecutive games without allowing a TE tally (after allowing at least one in each of their first 10).” True, but I like this play because Michael Crabtree is suspended, Amari Cooper is dinged and might sit as well, and Cook is a high-target safety blanket as well as a legit red zone option.

SNOOZERS

Matthew Stafford (QB – DET @ BAL)
Letting it ride after last week, because the host Ravens have the second-best pass defense in all the land. The extreme difference in preparation time – the Lions get 10 days, Baltimore only six – is a concern. But that is tempered by my opinion that Ravens coach John Harbaugh and his brain trust can negate any benefit derived from anyone with the name Jim Bob Cooter.

Todd Gurley (RB – LAR @ ARZ)
You have to start him – you’re not a moron – but I’m confident Gurley won’t tear up the Cardinals like he did in London earlier this season, when he went for more than 21 fantasy points. You can bet someone’s farm that the Arizona coaches will study what Minnesota did on defense against LA two weeks ago, when the Vikings won big. Bottom line, Rams QB Jared Goff is very talented, but his success relies in large part on Gurley having room to run and keeping the D guessing. The Cardinals figure to sell out to prevent that.

Mark Ingram (RB – NO vs. CAR)
The Panthers are the top D against opposing running backs. Teammate Alvin Kamara is more prominent in the passing game, so if form holds it will be Ingram enduring his second consecutive subpar performance.

Stefon Diggs (WR – MIN @ ATL)
Since returning to the lineup four weeks ago, the dangerous Diggs has been a dud in three of those games. He has become TD-dependent, due in large part to the emergence of Adam Thielen as a true No. 1 as well as QB Case Keenum‘s apparent preference for Thielen based on the relatively pedestrian number of targets Diggs is getting.

Dez Bryant (WR – DAL vs. WAS)
The rivalry with cornerback extraordinaire Josh Norman is among the league’s most entertaining, but when you also factor in Dallas’ recent passing game struggles – QB Dak Prescott has had more turnovers in the past three weeks than a chubby kid at McDonald’s – and that Bryant has five straight games of fewer than eight fantasy points, it’s really tough to envision anything beyond a few routine receptions.

OJ Howard (TE – TB @ GB)
In total fantasy points scored, Cameron Brate continues to be the Bucs’ top tight end. But he’s been so brutal of late, with just one catch in each of his last four games, that it seemed unfair to consider him elite enough normally to be a snoozer. Here’s the thing: the Packers are first in the league against opposing tight ends, having allowed just a single touchdown to the position. Avoid both of these dudes.

Week 12 Results

Calls So Good That I Need My Own End-Zone Celebration
(Sleepers) Andy Dalton, Mohamed Sanu – OK, so he threw a TD instead of catching one. Points are points. (Snoozers) Matthew Stafford, Jordan Howard, Michael Crabtree, Larry Fitzgerald, Jason Witten.

Calls That Missed As If I Was Just A Monkey With Darts
(Sleepers) Alfred Morris, JD McKissic, Jeremy Maclin, Vernon Davis. (Snoozers) Lamar Miller – the only man who stood between me and snoozer perfection (excuse me, but you’re snoring).
