Josh Johnson released by Oakland

Thu, May 10th 5:40pm EDT
By Jody Smith

The Oakland Raiders released veteran quarterback Josh Johnson, who had signed with the club on March 19th. Johnson spent time with the Texans in 2017 but hasn't seen NFL game action since 2013. (Source: Field Yates via Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Johnson was originally a 2008 fifth-round pick by Tampa Bay, where he spent his first three pro seasons before bouncing around the league. About to turn 32, Johnson's best days are behind him.

NBC's Scott Bair is reporting that the Raiders will pick up wide receiver Amari Cooper's fifth-year option on his contract. (Source: Scott Bair on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: There was never really any doubt about this happening, but under new head coach Jon Gruden, it appears anything is possible as he tries to rebuild the organization. It's hard to imagine Cooper's volume going down with Michael Crabtree out of town, but Gruden has been adamant about running the football and turning the game back to 1998. This is not the ideal scenario for a wide receiver who was already struggling with consistency. The talent is there with Cooper, it's just a matter of him putting it all together on a consistent basis. With so many variables in Oakland this offseason, it's hard to recommend Cooper as anything more than a boom-or-bust WR2, though it'd be an ideal scenario if he's the WR3 on your team.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the Baltimore Ravens and former Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree have agreed to terms on a three-year deal. (Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Crabtree will join a Ravens team notorious for adding veteran wideouts in the second half of their careers -- Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith, Derrick Mason, Jeremy Maclin. He'll be the clear-cut WR1, a role he may not flourish in. He was an upside WR2 during his tenure in Oakland. However, the Ravens are one of the pass-happiest offenses in the NFL and ample targets should set up Crabtree to have an outstanding year.

Aldon Smith released

Mon, Mar 5th 5:18pm EST
By Anthony Cervino

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the Oakland Raiders have released LB Aldon Smith on Monday. (Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: TMZ initially reported that Smith was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident over the weekend, fleeing the scene of a San Francisco home prior to the authority's arrival in the wake of a reported domestic violence altercation. Currently in the midst of a lengthy ban -- he's been out of the league since 2015 for multiple off the field altercations -- this is yet another blemish on Smith's resume. As a result of his latest alleged incident, Smith checked himself into a rehabilitation facility Monday just a few hours preceding his release by the Raiders. If his career wasn't already in jeopardy, this is the final dagger.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting Oakland Raiders RB Marshawn Lynch is expected to return for the 2018 season. (Source: Ian Rapoort on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Although Lynch started slowly in 2017, he began to pick up the peace in the second half of the year. Finishing his first season back in the league following a year-long hiatus -- in 15 games, he ran for 891 yards and seven TDs on 2017 carries, scoring 5-of-7 TDs from Week 9 and beyond -- Lynch looked like he had enough gas in the tank for one more productive season in the NFL. With the addition of head coach John Gruden, the Raiders offense should be in store for a bounce-back campaign in 2018. However, for Lynch, I wouldn't expect to get very much more than he gave his fantasy owners last season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the Oakland Raiders will not bring back K Sebastian Janikowski in 2018. (Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: The 17th overall pick in the 2000 draft by the Raiders, Janikowski will be in search of a new suitor for the 2018 season. Oakland is electing to move on from the veteran kicker after 17 seasons. After missing all of the 2017 seasons with a back injury, the 39-year-old kicker could call it quits following an outstanding NFL career. Still, because of the field goal kicking woes surrounding the league in recent memory, a seasoned veteran like Janikowski could be called upon by a team is desperation -- see Tampa Bay.

Oakland's defense allowed 387 yards and three TDs through the air and 115 yards on the ground in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Chargers. NaVorro Bowman led the team in tackles with 13, eight of those solo. Bowman and Bruce Irvin were each credited with half a sack each. Collectively, the defense recorded eight TFL and three QB hits.

Fantasy Impact: The defense was never able to establish an identity mostly because of injuries. A new regime will try to right the ship for 2018.

Derek Carr completed 19-of-28 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during the Raiders' Week 17 loss to the Chargers. Carr also was sacked twice and lost a fumble.

Fantasy Impact: Derek Carr ends his disappointing 2017 campaign with 3,496 yards passing, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 15 games. Derek Carr and the Raiders took a major step backwards after a breakout 2016 season. Carr will have an opportunity to rebound next season with a new coaching regime in town. Depending on the Raiders' coaching and roster moves, Carr could find his way back into the late round QB discussion for 2018 fantasy drafts.

Jared Cook hauled in three of four targets for 35 yards and a touchdown during the Raiders' Week 17 loss to the Chargers.

Fantasy Impact: Jared Cook posted a few high yardage games during the year but overall, his lack of touchdowns were disappointing. Jared Cook finishes his 2017 campaign with 54 receptions for 688 yards and two touchdowns. Cook is under contract for 2018 but the Raiders could decide to shake up the roster with a new coaching regime. Regardless of what happens, Cook will not be a desirable fantasy target in 2018 drafts.

Cordarrelle Patterson caught his only target for four yards in the Raiders' Week 17 loss to the Chargers.

Fantasy Impact: Patterson has big-play potential anytime he steps on the field with his speed. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old wide receiver does not provide enough stats to be worth owning in fantasy with just 31 catches on the season.

Category: Game Recaps

Seth Roberts caught five passes on six targets for 48 yards in the Raiders' Week 17 loss to the Chargers.

Fantasy Impact: Roberts finished 2017 with a career-high in catches with 43. The 26-year-old wide receiver is a solid WR3 in the NFL but does not see enough action to be worth owning in fantasy leagues.

DeAndre Washington had two carries for three yards and two receptions on three targets for 16 yards in Sunday night's 20-17 loss to the Cowboys.

Fantasy Impact: Just a quiet night for the backup running back. He doesn't have enough usage to carry any fantasy value.

Category: Game Recaps

Johnny Holton caught 3-of-7 targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders Week 13 win over the Giants.

Fantasy Impact: Holton had an opportunity for more targets on Sunday with Michael Crabtree out with a suspension and Amari Cooper dealing with a concussion. Expect Holton's targets to drop in Week 14 when Crabtree and Cooper come back.

Category: Game Recaps

Jalen Richard had one carry for four yards and one reception for five yards in Sunday's 24-17 win over the Giants.

Fantasy Impact: With the team in Beast Mode, hard to see much increase in usage for Richard.

Category: Game Recaps

Giorgio Tavecchio converted all three extra point attempts and both field goal tries in the Raiders' Week 9 win over the Dolphins on Sunday Night Football.

Fantasy Impact: Tavecchio converted from 36 and 53 yards out, so he turned in a nice fantasy performance this week. The Oakland offense still has plenty of scoring power, and Tavecchio looks like a solid kicker in terms of accuracy, so continue to roll him out in fantasy. The Raiders face the Patriots next week in a game that has shootout potential.

EJ Manuel underwhelmed in the Raiders' Week 5 loss to the Ravens. He went 13-of-26 for 159 yards with one touchdown. He added two rushing attempts for 15 yards.

Fantasy Impact: It sounds like Derek Carr should be back next week, so Manuel's brief cameo as the Raiders' quarterback should be over. Even if Carr misses another game, Manuel isn't a fantasy option outside of two-QB leagues.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent quarterback Matt McGloin on Monday. (Source: Adam Caplan on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: McGloin, who spent the previous four seasons in Oakland, signed with the Eagles Monday. He'll likely enter the 2017 season third on Philadelphia's quarterback depth chart behind starter Carson Wentz and presumed primary backup Nick Foles.

The Buffalo Bills and free agent wide receiver Andre Holmes agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $6.5 million. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Holmes, who spent the last four years in Oakland, signed with the Bills Saturday. Buried on the Raiders' wide receiver depth chart, Holmes caught 14 passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns last season while appearing in all 16 games. Since Buffalo's wideouts are all career role players outside of Sammy Watkins, Holmes has an outstanding chance to enter 2017 as one of the Bills' top three receivers.

The Minnesota Vikings and former Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray have agreed to a deal. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: The workhorse finished last season with 768 yards and 12 touchdowns on 195 attempts while catching 38 balls for 264 yards. Murray signing with the Vikings likely means that Adrian Petersons days in Minnesota are over. In regards to fantasy Murray should have similar value considering he should be more of a focal point in the offense rather than participating in a RBBC approach. Do not expect another 12 TD season but overall Murray can be considered a solid RB2 to begin the season.

Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith is expected to sign with the San Francisco 49ers when free agency begins. (Source: Mike Garagolo on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Malcolm Smith had a nice season in Oakland last year recording 103 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles. Smith should earn a starting nod in what seems to be a pretty decent 49ers team being put together. Smith would be a nice value add in any late IDP draft.
