Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 1

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 1
Kendall Graveman

Kendall Graveman will look to pick up where he left off in 2015

Happy Opening Day! Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 50% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

Sunday, April 3

Edinson Volquez – Kansas City Royals (67% owned)
vs. New York Mets

Okay, so I’m going to cheat on my first recommendation of the year. On this small slate, there aren’t any official streamer recommendations because there are only three games and all the probable pitchers are over 50% owned. If you really want to stream someone, Volquez at 67% ownership is the only probable pitcher who could be on the waiver wire.

Monday, April 4

Chris Tillman – Baltimore Orioles (3% owned)
vs. Minnesota Twins

Tillman will get Baltimore’s Opening Day start and will face off against a Minnesota offense that was just 26th in the league in batting average last season and was tied for 10th in the league with a 21.0% strikeout rate. Tillman lacks strikeout upside himself and is coming off a rough season, but he did post a 3.34 ERA in 2014. He could be in line to pick up a win if Baltimore’s high-powered offense gets off to a fast start.

Tuesday, April 5

Ian Kennedy – Kansas City Royals (47% owned)
vs. New York Mets

Kennedy had a rough time in San Diego last season, but count me among the believers he will bounce back this year. With his team change, he gets a serious upgrade in the defense department. San Diego had one of the worst defenses in the league last year while the Royals have one of the best in Major League Baseball. Kennedy is coming off two consecutive seasons averaging over nine strikeouts per nine inning, so the strikeout upside is still there. The 2015 Mets tied for the 10th-highest strikeout rate in the league and are projected to finish around there again this season.

Wednesday, April 6

Anibal Sanchez – Detroit Tigers (49% owned)
@ Miami Marlins

Sanchez struggled through an injury-plagued 2015 season which led to him posting the worst ERA of his career (outside of a 10-start campaign in 2008). The issue with Sanchez has always been staying healthy, but we don’t really need to worry about that when looking for streamers. Sanchez will take on a Marlins team that was second-to-last in the league in runs scored in 2015. If Sanchez starts off the season well, he’s worth keeping on your roster if you have room as he can be a fine fantasy asset when healthy.

Thursday, April 7

Kendall Graveman – Oakland A’s (1% owned)
vs. Chicago White Sox

Graveman struggled to begin last season before putting together a solid stretch of pitching from late-May to late-August. An oblique injury cut his season short, but expect him to build on his promising showing last year. He will take on a White Sox offense that scored the third-least runs in the league last season. The addition of Todd Frazier should help, but Graveman should be a strong streaming option this week.

Friday, April 8

Cody Anderson – Cleveland Indians (3% owned)
vs. Chicago White Sox

Anderson came out of nowhere to post a 3.05 ERA over 15 starts in 2015. The Indians liked what they saw and have him slotted in as the team’s fifth starter. His strikeout rate of 4.34 was really low, so there isn’t much upside there, but the solid results from last season are tough to ignore. He’s worth taking a shot on as a streamer for Friday against a White Sox offense that was one of the worst in the league last season.

Saturday, April 9

Chris Tillman – Baltimore Orioles (3% owned)
vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Tillman is worth keeping around as a two-start streamer this week as he takes on what should be a weak Tampa Bay offense on Saturday. Tampa Bay had a 21.4% strikeout rate and was last in the league in runs scored against right-handed pitchers last season. Tillman isn’t an exciting option, but he should be serviceable.
