Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 7

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 7
John Lamb

John Lamb has been impressive over his first two starts of the season

Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for pitchers who are less than 30% owned and could be useful streamers for your fantasy team. All ownership percentages come from Yahoo. Please note the probable pitcher matchups could change throughout the week due to rainouts or other circumstances, so be sure to check back before picking up and starting one of these recommendations.

All ownership percentages and statistics are current as of Friday, May 13th.

Sunday, May 15th
Trevor Bauer (CLE): vs. Minnesota Twins
Ownership: 23%

Bauer is coming off an excellent start where he shut the Astros out over seven innings, ringing up seven strikeouts. He will take on a Twins’ offense on Sunday which has been striking out at a 23.0% rate against right-handed pitching. That strikeout rate is seventh-highest in the league. Also helping Bauer’s cause is the fact the Twins’ offense is much worse on the road so this game being played in Cleveland should keep help neutralize Minnesota’s bats.

Monday, May 16th
John Lamb (CIN): @ Cleveland Indians
Ownership: 2%

Lamb has been impressive in his two starts, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven over 10 innings of work. The Indians have struggled against left-handed pitching for years and that has continued this season. When facing left-handed pitching, they are currently ranked 26th in wOBA, 28th in ISO, and are striking out at a 23.7% rate. Lamb gets a huge park boost as well as he escapes hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark to pitch in a more neutral Progressive Field.

Tuesday, May 17th
Wade Miley (SEA): @ Baltimore Orioles
Ownership: 9%

This is a tough day for streaming choices under 30% owned. It comes down to Nathan Eovaldi against a dangerous Arizona lineup, Tyler Wilson against an explosive Seattle offense, or Aaron Blair against a Pirates lineup that is one of the tops in the league against righties. So we will have to settle with Miley. The Orioles can also be dangerous, but they haven’t hit left-handers nearly as well as right-handers this season. Miley has pitched well over the past month, posting a 3.66 ERA, three wins, and 20 strikeouts over 32 innings of work. The Orioles at home still make me nervous, however, so it may be a good idea to sit this one out when it comes to streaming.

Wednesday, May 18th
Martin Perez (TEX): @ Oakland Athletics
Ownership: 4%

Perez can be maddening to roster as he tends to struggle with walks, but he also has done a reasonable job preventing runs and has a favorable matchup on tap for Wednesday. Oakland, when facing left-handed pitchers, is 22nd in the league in batting average and ISO, and 25th in wOBA. They are also last in the league in walk rate, so Perez might be able to avoid issuing excessive free passes for at least this start. Perez will also enjoy a significant ballpark boost pitching in Oakland Coliseum.

Thursday, May 19th
Jeff Locke (PIT): vs. Atlanta Braves
Ownership: 2%

Locke has been middling at best this season, but he draws one of the top matchups in the league for left-handed pitchers. Atlanta’s offense, when facing lefties, is ranked last in wOBA and ISO, while their 25.0% strikeout rate ranks fifth-highest in the league. Locke is in as good a spot as a left-handed pitcher can be and should be able to return a useful fantasy start for those who stream him.

Friday, May 20th
Alex Wood (LAD): @ San Diego Padres
Ownership: 32%

Okay, so Wood is technically 2% over the ownership threshold, but a matchup with the Padres is too good to pass up. San Diego is slightly better against lefties than they are against righties, but they are still in the ranked 20th or lower in both wOBA and ISO and have the fourth-highest strikeout rate in the league. Wood’s xFIP is almost a full run lower than his ERA, suggesting he’s pitching better than it appears at first glance.

Saturday, May 21st
Adam Morgan (PHI): vs. Atlanta Braves
Ownership: 1%

As mentioned in the Jeff Locke section above, Atlanta is one of the worst offenses in the league when facing left-handed pitching. Morgan faced the Braves last week and held them to one run over seven innings, striking out four batters. He has a good shot at turning in a similar effort on Saturday.
