2020 NFL Free Agency Predictions (Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Amari Cooper and more)

2020 NFL Free Agency Predictions (Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Amari Cooper and more)

It may be the 40-yard dash day at the combine, but NFL Free agency is right around the corner. In just three short weeks, we’ll be finding out where the greatest free agent quarterback group in NFL history is going to end up. Likewise, we’ve got a handful of starting-capable running backs, one premier wide receiver and a trio of three strong tight ends. As if that wasn’t enough, the defensive free agents are loaded too and we’ll dive into my projected destinations for them all.

Quarterbacks

Ryan Tannehill – Patriots
In my opinion, Brees is still the best quarterback of the bunch and while many will argue that Dak is the most impactful free agent quarterback, I disagree. Yes, he is a franchise QB but one who has excelled to the extent he has because of a consistent top offensive line, running back and now some quality wide receivers. Tannehill, meanwhile, is five years older and has a mediocre at best track record but just posted one of the most efficient seasons in NFL history. Yes, Nick Foles did as well, but there are also cases like Rich Gannon, Kurt Warner and Tom Brady, who just became incredible overnight and stayed that way. Tannehill was finally in a decent offense last year and quite literally transformed them into the best offense in football. The tape was legitimate too, as evidenced by Pro Football Focus grading him as the #3 QB and ahead of both Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. Imagine this version of Tannehill under Bill Belichick. I’m wagering Tannehill is the reason that the Patriots are letting Brady walk this off-season.

Running Backs

Derrick Henry – Texans
Let me just come out and say it: I don’t think the running back position is all that important. And when I say “that” I mean worthy of a 90 million dollar contract and especially after a 26-year-old racks up over 400 touches between the regular season and playoffs combined. With the Titans needing to shell out dollars for a quarterback, be it Tannehill, Brady or someone else, I’m betting on them letting Henry walk or tagging him. If they do, someone else will pay for Henry and the Texans seem like the most likely candidate with Hyde and Miller both gone, plus they have 60 million to spend this off-season.

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

Amari Cooper – Colts
Dak is asking for 40 million dollars per year and while they can franchise him, it virtually guarantees that he’ll walk out the door in 2021. My my best guess is that they’ll pay the man which leaves little no money to bring Cooper back. There are all kinds of teams who would love to have the needs to add him, but the Colts can outbid virtually anyone and seeing their need at the position, especially with T.Y. Hilton‘s age, and the liklihood of convincing Brady to quarterback their roster behind their superior offensive line, it seems like a strong possibility that Cooper, too, ends up with the GOAT. If he does, Cooper could have an extraordinary season on the turf.

Defensive and O-Line Stars

Shaquil Barrett (Edge) – Bucs (TAG)
This year’s free agent class is loaded on the defensive side of the ball. Many are suggesting that Jones is the top available player but Shaq had nearly 20 sacks last year. The problem with him, though, is that many are wondering if he is a one-year wonder. After all, he had just 14 sacks in the prior four seasons with Denver. It may be in the best interest for both Tampa and Barrett if they just hand him the franchise tag and let him prove it wasn’t a fluke. If he can accomplish it, we could be talking about a historical pay-day this time next year.
