Notes
Glasnow is really a fascinating case study. He followed up an incredible 60-inning stretch in 2019 (1.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 33% strikeout rate) with a bit of a step back last year (4.08 ERA and 1.13 WHIP). But his xFIP in 2020 (2.75) was actually lower than in 2019 (2.94), and his strikeout rate jumped to a whopping 38.2%. The real issue for Glasnow is that he's a two-pitch pitcher, and although both his fastball and curveball are outstanding, they need to be superb at all times for him to have a dominant season. And last year, they were both just a bit worse than the season prior, particularly his fastball. With enormous strikeout upside and a spot in the rotation of one of the best and most pitching-savvy teams in the Rays, Glasnow makes a fine SP2 for a fantasy team. But his injury history, and his lack of a third pitch, make him a bit riskier than others going in his range.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Carrasco returned strong from his battle with leukemia in 2019 to post a 2.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 2020. Pretty much everything was back to normal with Carrasco's production other than his walk rate, where he went from several years under 6% to a 9.6% mark in 2020. That's likely just the oddities of a shortened season, however, and now that Carrasco is with the Mets, his stock should only go up. Not only should the Mets provide him with a better chance at wins, but their infield defense should be above average and Carrasco will play in a more favorable park. In other words, it's all gravy for Carrasco, and he can be drafted as an SP2.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Glasnow is a classic risk-reward fantasy selection where he's being drafted. A prominent strikeout artist, he has completed six full innings in just 9-of-23 regular season starts since joining the Rays. A two-pitch pitcher, Glasnow is literally un-hittable when he's "on." However, when you have just two pitches, batters can more easily guess what's coming. This is what led to the 27-year-old giving up 11 homers in 2020. The strikeouts are nice but it feels like there's too much potential downside when considering his current ADP.
Brendan Tuma - FantasyPros
We can completely write off Carrasco's 2019 season as the right-hander was going through a battle with leukemia. The 33-year-old heroically bounced back last summer, posting a 2.91 ERA to go along with a 1.21 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 64 innings. A 9.6% walk rate is mildly concerning, but Carrasco misses enough bats that he should still be viewed as a reliable SP2/3. The perception around him seems to be that he isn't durable, but Carrasco started 30 games three times from 2015-18.
