Notes
Gomes was one of only two catchers last year to bat .266 with 50+ runs scored. That may not feel like much, but the catching position is rough. He'll add 15 homers too, making him a top 10 fantasy catching option this year.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
It is tempting to draft everyone's favorite short chubby catcher, but the fact of the matter is that he likely won't even open the season on the big league club. There is some intrigue here if/when he gets called up, but until then, he belongs on the waivers.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Gomes' 2018 (.266, 16 HR, 48 RBI, 52 runs) was enough to make him a top-10 catcher last season. Yet he's now going to split time in Washington with Kurt Suzuki, who posted similar numbers (.271, 12 HR, 50 RBI, 45 runs) in a timeshare for the Braves. That makes both of them solid second catchers who can fill is as a one-catcher stopgap if the other one gets hurt.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
The legend of Astudillo will only continue to grow. Brandishing a stat page more in line with a 1918 player, the contact machine recorded 85 walks and 81 strikeouts in 2,461 career minor league plate appearances. After turning heads with eight homers in the Venezuelan League, he opened camp by taking Twins ace Jose Berrios yard. Although unlikely to open the season as the starting catcher, he could piece together plate appearances in a utility role. Those odds diminished, however, after the Twins signed Marwin Gonzalez. He's a fun pick at a gloomy position who would hit for average with decent power if given the chance.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
With a strikeout rate below five percent at every level of the minors -- and during his 30 game cup of coffee with the Twins last year -- Astudillo has the kind of high-level contact skills that can make him an asset in batting average, particularly at the weak-hitting catcher position. He could also pop 15 home runs if given regular at-bats, but it's his at-bat total that is the big question. Astudillo isn't guaranteed a roster spot, let alone a starting job, but if he can find a way to reach 300+ plate appearances, he will be an intriguing dark horse candidate to finish as a top-12 catcher in mixed leagues. He's worth monitoring closely in Spring Training.
