Original report (8/9/16): Very Deep Sleepers: Tyrell Williams

September 2016 update…

I’ll start this update the same way I did the original report: I thought I’d have more time to write this article…

Previously, I promoted Williams as a deep fantasy sleeper to matter as a possible Chargers’ No. 2 wide receiver at some point this season – sooner rather than later. I thought he’d easily beat out James Jones (he did), and then rise up past Travis Benjamin at some point. However, the game has suddenly changed. Radically changed.

With Keenan Allen done for 2016, there is a void left behind at the No. 1 WR spot for San Diego. Most will assume ‘stock up’ for Travis Benjamin. Some will put their chips on Dontrelle Inman. I’m shoving all my chips in on Tyrell Williams.

Travis Benjamin is a nice deep-ball, No. 2 wide receiver option…he does not have a stud No. 1 WR profile. Dontrelle Inman was already pushed past by Williams in the preseason. Inman will see a few more targets in Week 2, I’m sure. But Williams is the one who truly fits the mold as an ideal No. 1 wide receiver for Philip Rivers.

I understand the risks – Williams is a raw talent…it may take him weeks to step up. Rivers has more time logged with Inman. I’m also sure the Chargers will re-sign James Jones or recently released Brian Hartline to gum up the story a little bit. Despite the risks, I’m going with Williams. He was a top 30 overall (top 20 just looking at offensive players) dynasty rookie draft prospect for us in 2015, back when he was a virtual unknown. I also listed him in our top 30 dynasty prospects in a dynasty rookie draft re-do this spring, in an article where I conducted a mashup rookie draft using 2015 and 2016 rookies (CFM Dynasty Rookie Draft Mashup — 2015-2016 prospects).

The detailed scouting and reasoning on why we have been so high on Williams the past year is also explained in our summer ‘Very Deep Sleeper’ report series on FantasyPros with our original August report on him here: Very Deep Sleepers: Tyrell Williams.
