Pitcher
James Paxton (SEA): $9,300 vs. LAA
There are many stud pitchers to choose from tonight. So, if you are looking for a contrarian option, take a chance on James Paxton. He is having an excellent season so far! Over his last five starts, he is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.33 and 26 strikeouts. He is going up against an Angels’ team that just hasn’t been hitting. Against southpaws like Paxton, the Angels are 24th in runs scored and dead last in home runs among major league teams. Even the infamous Mike Trout is 2-for-20 against Paxton with 10 whiffs. A good option allowing you to add some stud bats tonight!
Catcher
Salvador Perez (KAS): $3,200 vs. CWS
One of the aforementioned stud pitchers going tonight is Jose Quintana. The Royals as a team have been struggling at the plate, so this isn’t a stack option. But Perez has not been struggling. He is batting .316 over his last seven games and has seen a ton of Quintana. Perez is 19-for-60 against the lefty with two homers, eight RBIs and has struck out only 13 times. I’m sold.
First Base
Josh Bell (PIT): $3,000 @ CIN
With no games at Coors and Chase Field today, we must look elsewhere for short fences. The Great American Ballpark fits the mold at L-379/C-404/R-370, respectfully. Bell has started to pick it up as of late. He is hitting .350 with two homers, seven hits and five walks over his last seven games. Scott Feldman is always a target with a 7.20 ERA, five earned runs and five walks the last time he took the mound. For whom the Bell tolls…and all that.
Second Base
Josh Harrison (PIT): $3,000 @ CIN
Going to stay with Pittsburgh and another Josh in this pick. This time, Harrison. Harrison has been hot at the plate batting .304 on the year and .333 over his last seven games with eight hits and a homer. As I mentioned, I like the park in Cincinnati and the match-up against Feldman.
Third Base
Miguel Sano (MIN): $3,700 vs. OAK
Often overlooked among the power bats, Sano has been tearing it up over his last seven games showing off a .545 batting average, 11 RBIs, and three homers. He will face Sonny Gray. Where’s he been…right? He pretty much has been missing since last season with a lat strain. I wouldn’t want to face a hot Sano on my first day back, would you? He is $700 cheaper than the top guy Kris Bryant today and is capable of doing as much damage.
Outfield
Nick Markakis (ATL): $3,400 vs. NYM
Another very overlooked fantasy option is Markakis. Against right-handers this season, Markakis has 22 hits, scored 10 runs and has walked 10 times. He is 5-for-16 vs. Matt Harvey with four walks. Harvey has had a rough season so far with a 4.25 ERA. He gave up six earned runs in his last start. I like Nick’s chances, and the price is right!
Matt Holliday (NYY): $3,000 vs. TOR
Let’s face it. Matt Latos is just a fill-in until J.A. Happ makes it back from the DL. The person with the 0.00 ERA vs. the Cardinals last time out was just an illusion. He did walk four in that game, and Latos has just never lived up to the hype and can’t stay healthy. That being said, Holliday is batting .368 with two home runs over his past seven games. He has an ISO of .207 meaning he is ready to put one out of the park against Latos. Holliday is 11-for-29 lifetime against Latos with eight RBIs. Can’t wait for this face-off!
Kole Calhoun (LAA): $2,800 @ SEA
If you decide to go against my pick of James Paxton on the hill, then consider Kole Calhoun for and OF spot. Kole has been smoking with a .344 BA and 11 hits over his last seven games, which is a tie for the most hits during that period along with Charlie Blackmon and Andrew Jones. He has seen Paxton a few times before and is 7-for-23 lifetime against the lefty. Over the last three seasons, he has hit lefties pretty well batting .250 with 16 homers.
