FanDuel MLB Value Plays: Wednesday (5/24)

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of FanDuel MLB value plays. Tonight we have 10 games to work with on the main slate on FanDuel. As always, be sure to check the weather and the team lineups as they are released to make sure these players are in fact playing. Let’s go ahead and take a look at my favorite value options for the day.

Pitcher

Robert Gsellman (NYM): $6,500 vs. SD
Chris Sale has been so dominant this season that it is tough justify using any other pitcher, even in GPPs. However, if you’re want to go the opposite approach and go cheap with pitching so that you can load up on bats, Robert Gsellman is the way to go. Gsellman has not been great this season, but his FIP indicates he has not been nearly as bad as his ERA would lead you to believe. Tonight he has an outstanding matchup against the Padres who rank 25th in wRC+ and 2nd in K% against right-handed pitchers this season.

Catcher

Cameron Rupp (PHI): $2,500 vs. COL
Cameron Rupp has been excellent against left-handed pitchers over his career with a 0.389 wOBA and a 0.263 ISO. Tyler Chatwood has been more of a reverse-splits pitcher in his career, but he has not been outstanding against right-handed hitters by any means.

First Base

Matt Adams (ATL): $2,400 vs. PIT
Matt Adams has now hit a home run in each of his past two games, and he has another decent matchup tonight against Trevor Williams. Williams has really struggled with his command and the long ball this season with a 3.91 BB/9 and a 1.78 HR/9.

Second Base

Brandon Phillips (ATL): $2,700 vs. PIT
Another cheap Braves’ hitter who we can use against Williams is Phillips. Phillips typically hits in the two-hole for the Braves and has been decent this season with a 0.337 wOBA against right-handed pitchers.

Third Base

Evan Longoria (TB): $2,800 vs. LAA
The Rays were completely shut down last night by Matt Shoemaker, but I’m not afraid to target a cheap bat or two tonight. Evan Longoria is having far from a great season, but he still has some pop with a 0.187 wOBA against right-handed pitchers. Ricky Nolasco has really struggled with opposing right-handed hitters this year, allowing a 0.375 wOBA and a 3.16 HR/9 in nine starts.

Shortstop

Alexi Amarista (COL): $2,500 at PHI
Amarista has really done well over the past week while the Rockies wait for the return of Trevor Story. Over his last five starts, Amarista has 10 hits, seven RBIs and six runs scored. Amarista typically hits in the bottom third of the order, but I’m willing to overlook that since the Rockies are the visiting team and value at shortstop is pretty ugly at the moment. Story could return Wednesday, so be sure to check lineups.

Outfielders

Chris Young (BOS): $2,500 vs. TEX
Whenever there is a left-handed pitcher on the mound I’m willing to take a look at Chris Young as a value option. Young has crushed lefties over the course of his career with a 0.365 wOBA and a 0.212 ISO. Martin Perez has been decent so far this season, but Fenway is not a great environment for visiting pitchers since the Red Sox will load up their lineup with righties and with the Big Green Monster only 310 feet away down the left field line.

Albert Almora Jr. (CHC): $2,300 vs. SF
In an extremely small sample size, Albert Almora has been excellent against left-handed pitchers with a 0.387 batting average and two home runs in 31 at-bats this season. Almora hit in the two-hole the other night against the Giants and if he’s in that spot again tonight against Matt Moore, he is definitely worth a look as a salary saving option tonight.

Nick Markakis (ATL): $2,900 vs. PIT
I never seem to be able to get Nick Markakis right when I use him, but he is definitely in play tonight at home against Williams. Markakis has been making good contact this season with a 36.2% hard contact rate against right-handed pitchers. I already mentioned how we can pick on Williams tonight.
