We’ve now got one preseason game in the books. While some will say it’s just one game and that the starters barely even played, we can gather plenty of information from the action we did see. As we’ll be doing each Monday through the preseason, I’ll give you my biggest takeaways, along with updated rankings. Here are the highlights of my notes from Week 1 of the preseason:
- Rashard Higgins is a legitimate sleeper as he was on the field with Baker Mayfield and they connected for a touchdown on their first drive. While he’s the No. 3 receiver, if either of Odell Beckham Jr. or Jarvis Landry were to miss any time, he’d be very relevant.
- The drumbeat continues for Patriots rookie wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, as he’s been a superstar at training camp, and it continued into game-action, scoring two touchdowns.
- Bears running back David Montgomery made a strong case to move atop the depth chart, bouncing off would-be tacklers, showcasing jump-cuts, and hauling in three passes.
- Dante Pettis played into the second quarter, which is not what you want to see when drafting a receiver inside the top-36 at his position. The evaluation of wide receivers in San Francisco continues.
- While Donte Moncrief is listed as the No. 2 receiver on the Steelers depth chart, James Washington looked phenomenal in the first game and should see time with Ben Roethlisberger at some point this preseason.
