Clayton Richard pitches complete game as Padres avoid sweep in Petco Sunday

by Joshua Wattay | Mon, May 22nd 7:41am EDT

Clayton Richard pitched nine innings allowing five hits, one earned-run, one home-run, and striking out six batters during Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Impact:

Not only was Sunday Richard's first complete game of the 2017 season, it was also his first complete game since August of 2012 and the fourth complete game of his career. The 33-year-old veteran's record improved to 3-5 on the season as the Padres also ended a five-game losing streak. Richard has been hot and cold this season through ten starts, with earned-runs of zero, one, two, four, five, and six. He holds a respectable 4.31 earned-run-average with 62 2/3 innings-pitched and a 1.39 WHIP on the season. Richard is a start-able option at pitcher if he has a favorable match-up. Owners should also note that Richard did not commit any walks in this outing, something he did twice in his last complete game August 8th, 2012. With more dominant performances like this, he could be the guy that San Diego leans on to set the tone on the mound.
