Brandon McCarthy shows both the good and bad in Dodgers debut

by Stan Son | Thu, Apr 9th 12:58am EDT

The final line doesn't show it, but Brandon McCarthy was very impressive Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres. Matt Kemp drilled an inside sinker for a single into centerfield then the next batter, Justin Upton, crushed a mammoth home run into the left field bullpen on the same inside sinker. After that, McCarthy struck out eight over the next four innings. At around 90 pitches, the Padres hit him hard in the sixth inning and knocked him out of the game. McCarthy totaled nine strikeouts, walked one, and allowed nine hits with two home runs.

Fantasy Impact:

McCarthy throws hard, reaching 95 mph. The movement on his sinker, two-seamer, cutter, and change-up are very impressive. When he misses location, it is usually over the heart of the plate that makes him susceptible to the long ball. At the cost it takes to acquire McCarthy, he is definitely worth the risk.
