Matt Harvey continues struggles in loss to Nats

by Nick Ritrivi | Wed, May 25th 10:08am EDT

Hoping for a bounce back start against Washington on Tuesday, Matt Harvey once again turned in a poor pitching performance in the Mets' 7-4 loss to the Nationals. In only five innings of work, Harvey yielded eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and only managed to strike out one batter. He also allowed three home runs, including a fifth inning, monstrous two-run home run by Daniel Murphy which landed somewhere in N.W., D.C. near DuPont Circle. While Harvey's fastball velocity was up early in the game (reaching 96-97 mph), by the fifth inning his velocity had diminished again. In addition, he lacked command of his off-speed pitches throughout the game.

Fantasy Impact:

Harvey's ERA on the season is now an absolutely horrific 6.08 after 53 1/3 innings. His WHIP is also sitting at 1.69. Terry Collins intimated that the Mets may skip Harvey's next start, and rightfully so. Whether the issue is mental, physical or some combination of the two, Harvey needs time and perhaps a trip to AAA-Las Vegas to get back on track. Despite the struggles, Harvey owners should resist the temptation to drop him or trade him at his low point. His pedigree and talent are too valuable for him to continue struggling like this.
