Lineups
The Rams cut Todd Gurley, a former Offensive Player of the Year, this offseason, leaving behind a confusing three-man backfield. Malcolm Brown is supposedly the starter, but second-year Darrell Henderson and rookie Cam Akers are the guys with clear upside. Akers is a phenomenal talent who should win the starting job, it's just unclear how long it will take as he gets used to NFL pass protection and pass-catching. He's a great high-upside pick in the middle rounds.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Although Akers has the raw tools to be a star, Florida State wasn't very creative with him in the passing game. That isn't likely to be a problem in an offense run by Rams head coach Sean McVay, who is likely to lean heavily on Akers in 2020.Duke Johnson's pass-catching role is expected to be similar to what it's been in recent years, even with David Johnson having been acquired in a trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. Duke Johnson's fantasy upside is limited outside of PPR leagues.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The Rams were going to draft a running back - we knew that after they interviewed a ton of them in the draft process. What we didn't know was that they'd take one with their first pick in the draft. While Darrell Henderson is a threat to Akers' overall workload, they clearly know what they have in Henderson, and drafted Akers early. It seems like Henderson is going to be the lesser part of the timeshare, while Akers is the early-down back and likely to receive goal-line work. There's a chance Henderson has a bigger role than anticipated, which prevents us from trusting Akers as anything more than a high-end RB3.Despite continually being one of the most efficient running backs in football, it seems there's no head coach who wants to give Johnson his shot at a bigger role. This will be his sixth season in the NFL and he's never topped 104 carries in a season despite the fact that he's averaged 4.5 yards per carry (4.91 over the last four years) over his career. Now having to deal with David Johnson, whose best attribute is catching passes out of the backfield, it's unlikely Duke has any value with David healthy. However, it needs to be stated that David has played just 22 full games over the last three years and will be 29 years old at the end of the season. Should he miss time, Duke might get the opportunity that we've been waiting for.

Potential three down workhorse on a dynamite offense
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Incredible RB prospect who has opportunity to play as a rookie. In an explosive offense who profiles as a workhorse. Should be amongst the top RBs in the game within a few short years. Banking on upside here and the profile to win out.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Both in reality and fantasy, Cam Akers is one of the most exciting rookies coming into the league. He enters an offense that desperately needs a new face at the RB position and I expect Akers to be that guy. Due to COVID, it may take a few weeks, but Akers should finish the season as the clear RB1 on the Rams and has top-24 fantasy potential as well.Hopes were high for Johnson when he arrived in Houston last year but he never managed to live up to expectations. Now, it looks like he'll be playing second fiddle once again with David Johnson coming in from Arizona. In PPR Johnson has some upside but he's unlikely to be a reliable starter.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
My bet for rookie RB to see most touches - skills to be a featured back (with a little pass game improvement), and team clearly lacks confidence in D. Henderson in that role
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Johnson is a fine running back who is always efficient, and yet never earns a large role with his team. He took a back seat to Carlos Hyde last year and now has to contend with David Johnson, a far superior pass-catching back to Hyde. In other words, if Duke Johnson didn't carve out a big role last year, it's tough to see him carving out one this year. He's a high-end handcuff option, but don't expect him to have much independent value absent an injury to David Johnson.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
The Rams may have as many as four members in their RBBC, Akers is the early favorite to be the lead back in one of the most intriguing timeshare situations in the NFL.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Akers was a 5-star HS recruit, played behind one of the worst O-Lines in the country at FSU and still put up 1,100 and 8 his freshman year. He can rush, pass, and block, is durable, and was a 2nd round pick by a team that had just spent a 3rd round pick on a RB the year prior. Plus, even in a down year last season, Gurley put up 14 TDs in that offense. Akers is a RB2 with high-end RB1 upside.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
This is one of the most puzzling selections to me in the entire draft. While I wasn't a huge Akers fan heading into the draft, I believed he could have value as a pass-catching back or a player that would thrive being moved out into space. Darrell Henderson is still there and could be the 1st/2nd down back, while Akers assumes the 3rd down work. However, this OL is still horrendous and is not going to help these RBs at all. This could be a David Montgomery type selection in year one, where the talent level is there, but the OL just simply can't hold up. Akers is a very risky pick in Dynasty leagues. With the addition of David Johnson, there are a lot of unknowns here in Houston and this backfield. Duke should remain the pass-catching specialist, while David carries the ball primarily in-between the tackles. If we see David struggle again with injury though, Duke could be in line for a huge workload.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Cam Akers has the easiest path to a featured role among these rookie RBs in terms of proven competition in their backfield. Akers also happens to be a baller. @Ihartitz
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Despite being 7th in total yards, the Rams somehow managed to give only 1500 of them to their RBs. While that's less than ideal, there is room for growth. There are rumblings that the Rams want to do more on the ground and with Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown proving underwhelming to this point, it's entirely possible that by halfway through the season, this is Cam Akers's backfield. Given the huge TD and fantasy point upside that role has previously held, a return to form for the Rams could make the young rookie a fantasy stud. Be very aware that he'll start the season slowly but he could rumble home with a head of steam if things fall his way. It's frustrating how a back who consistently has amazing metrics in Duke Johnson continually falls behind mediocre runners like Carlos Hyde. That certainly won't change this year either, with David Johnson the clear lead back and likely to steal some receptions as well. If David stays healthy all season there's little chance Duke is even startable. If the injury-prone DJ goes down though, it could be open season for the former Brown. I like him as a handcuff and desperation PPR starter but little else as a borderline RB3 finish is likely in his future.

David Johnson now overlaps his receiving role... ugh.
