Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 6/14: Moving all around. Every practice is another take on how active Barkley has been. No competition added. Beefy line additions. Can Brian Daboll revive him?! Ideal offseason so far | 6/14 - Henderson already hurt, Kyren Williams broke leg. Akers might be fed 20+ touches a week & if he returns to rookie form he'll win leagues at this price PLUS he is 100% healthy & rumored to be even more active in the passing game. LOVE his 4th round value right now |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | With O line, head coach upgrades it's worth a look back at his rookie numbers as a reminder of what a healthy Barkley is capable of | Miraculously returned from blown Achilles after half-year of rehab, but lacked previous explosiveness - will the offseason help him finally regain it? |
Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Once a locked-and-loaded top-five fantasy football selection, Barkley is now routinely selected in the third round. His inability to stay healthy has hindered him from being able to recapture his rookie form in addition to the Giants' h0rrible situation on offense. But under a new coaching staff and vastly improved offensive line, there's reason to buy back in on Barkley at a massive discount. In 5 games last season when Barkley played a full snap share with Daniel Jones under center, the Giants RB averaged 16.2 PPR points per game (RB10). Backup Devontae Booker out-scored Barkley on a per-game basis in all other games played (10.0 vs 9.1). | It's clear that the experts and sharps are convinced that Cam Akers sucks at football after he averaged an abysmal 2.4 yards per carry during the 2021 season after returning from his Achilles injury - the worst mark of any running back with at least 70 carries. But his inefficient production is partially related to the juggernaut of run defenses he faced down the stretch - San Francisco 49ers (twice) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers - when in fact no Rams RB ran efficiently. 95% of his rushing yards in 2021 came after contact - the highest mark in the NFL. Did I also mention he was never even supposed to come back at ALL last season due his Achilles injury? If Travis Etienne came back from his injury and failed to perform, would that be held against his draft stock? There's simply too much emphasis placed on Akers' production when touch volume is the key driver to fantasy success at running back. In the Rams' divisional playoff win versus the Buccaneers, Akers played 81% of the Los Angeles offensive snaps and out-touched Sony Michel (signed with Miami this offseason) 27 to three. I expect Akers to be dialed back in as the top RB next season in Sean McVay's consistent 1RB offense, where the team's lead back averages 20-plus touches per game. Darrell Henderson has proven he's nothing more than a replaceable running back that the Rams continue to try and replace. Not to mention, Akers has a cakewalk of soft-run defenses to open the season against the Bills, Falcons and Cardinals. Won't take long for Akers to pay off his early Round 4 ADP in a high-powered offense. |
Derek Brown FantasyPros | Last season was nightmare fuel for Saquon Barkley. In his return from the ACL injury, he posted his career's lowest breakaway run rate (3.1%, per Playerprofiler.com) and yards after contact per attempt (2.69, per PFF). With Joe Judge and Jason Garrett's special brand of season-destroying special sauce gone, Barkley has all the motivation to crush this year as a pending free agent. With the additions of Jon Feliciano, Mark Glowinski, and first-round pick Evan Neal to pair with holdover Andrew Thomas, the blocking upfront should be much improved. A massive bounce-back campaign could be brewing. | Cam Akers wasn't expected to return last year in time for the playoffs, but he pulled it off. He saw snap shares from 39% to as high as 81%. While he racked up volume in the process with 18.7 touches per game, his efficiency numbers were middling at best. His 2.31 yards after contact per attempt was a far cry from the 2.96 he rattled off in his rookie season (per PFF). With a full offseason to hopefully recoup any lost juice and return to his first-year form, Akers has the upside to be a workhorse in one of the best offenses in the NFL. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Barkley missed 4 games in the fantasy season with injury and he had only 807 yards from scrimmage and 4 TDs averaging just 4.3 yards per touch in those 12 fantasy games. Between his health and the Giants horrible supporting cast, they are wasting a generational talent. | The good thing with Cam Akers being injured so early in the season was that he returned for the playoffs and he will be ready for a full offseason. There is some concern that Darrell Henderson Jr. could cause a split in the backfield, but Akers is the better fantasy option of the two and he should be a RB2. |
