Derek Lofland FantasyPros | McCaffrey was the 3rd ranked running back in fantasy football last year and he is one of the best duel-threat running backs in the NFL. | Gordon was 6th among fantasy running backs, despite playing in only 12 games in 2018. He may miss that many games again with a contract dispute and the Chargers have allowed him to seek a trade. This situation looks like it could spill deep into the regular season. |
Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | McCaffrey blew up in 2018 and it's got everyone reaching for him as a top-three selection in 2019. It's fair and you shouldn't shy away from the three-down back, but you should know that the Panthers have openly talked about scaling back his workload. He's still likely to finish as a top-five option at the position even if he loses 4-to-6 touches per game, as he's gamescript-proof and it's not as if Cam Newton is rushing for as many touchdowns as he used to. | He's not going to win the rushing title or anything, and it's very unlikely that he finishes as a top-three fantasy running back, but he's about as safe as they come considering he's been a top-eight running back in each of the last three seasons. There were just four running backs who delivered RB2 or better performances in at least 90 percent of their games: Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, Ezekiel Elliott, and Gordon. His holdout is starting to get a bit concerning, as we have no solution in sight, making him a risky pick inside the top three rounds. |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Talk that CAR might try to scale back workload after CMC's 326 touches in '18 (finishing RB3 in half PPR scoring), but the team certainly hasn't backed up its RB in a manner that indicates that is truly the plan | Fantasy PPG finishes at RB in half-PPR over past 3 seasons has been 3rd, 7th and 5th, respectively - the rub here is obviously a very real holdout threat that could wipe out half a season in '19 - if he signs before your draft (highly unlikely), vault him into the top 5 RBs |
Kevin Roberts Breaking Football | I'm not hearing the chatter that CMAC could lose red-zone looks. As long as you get PPR love in your league, this dude has to be a top-5 lock. | You have to play to pay off in fantasy football and (gulp) Gordon is pretty overrated. He's still talented with a big role if he plays, but this isn't a risk worth taking in my eyes. Of course, the value is worth it if he sliiiiiides. |
Bart Wheeler Hail to Fantasy Football | I continue to move him down. Starting to get worried he could sit out half the season. But of course a total guess at this point.
Bobby Sylvester FantasyPros | McCaffrey was exceptional last year with 1,965 yards from scrimmage. It certainly helped that he saw 107 receptions, likely because Cam Newton was playing with an injured shoulder, but let's not forget that he was only given 219 carries which could certainly increase if his passing workload decreases. McCaffrey is as safe of a week to week and season-long play as you'll find. | Prior to the holdout becoming a realistic possibility, Gordon was locked into the top 6 picks. At this point, however, he is falling out of even the second round in most cases and that may further plummet if the holdout extends into the preseason. Even if he doesn't sign before your fantasy draft, you can't let him fall past your third round pick because there is just too much upside. |
Kevin Wheeler Draftwize | In 2018, Christian McCaffrey scored: -More rushing fantasy points than Melvin Gordon, Nick Chubb, or Marlon Mack; - More receiving fantasy points than Odell Beckham Jr., Amari Cooper, or Tyler Lockett; - More passing fantasy points than Nathan Peterman, DeShone Kizer, or Mark Sanchez. (Those three combined for 158 total pass attempts.) @ScottBarrettDFB | I'm assuming a 4-game hold out here |
Dan Harris FantasyPros | McCaffrey's usage last year was almost comical - he was on the field for 91% of the snaps and got nearly 100% of the running back touches for the Panthers. If you've seen pictures of him this offseason, you know he has bulked up, which is necessary if he's going to continue at anything close to the rate the Panthers utilized him last year. There's still no one of consequence behind him and so he should again see a massive workload. So long as he can again stay healthy, it's hard to envision him finishing outside the top four running backs even in standard formats. | There are little concerns about Gordon's ability when he's on the field, but his holdout currently shows no signs of ending. The Chargers continue to maintain that they are not going to budge from their current offer, and Gordon insists he won't take it. Gordon could conceivably hold out until Week 10, the point at which he will need to report or lose a year of service time. With the questions surrounding him, and after fantasy owners were burned by Le'Veon Bell's holdout last year, his draft price needs to fall to closer to that of an RB3 for now. |
Michael Petropoulos BRoto Fantasy | Very risky pick right now with the holdout. Obviously would be a huge steal if he returns, but you have to take him in one of the first three rounds.
Jason Petropoulos BRoto Fantasy | What makes MelGo so lethal is his rushing TD upside and usage in the passing game. Never included in discussion of best pass-catching backs, MelGo has been racking up receptions for years. Last season, Chargers RBs combined for a receiving line of - 138 targets, 104 receptions, 1,029 yards, 7 TDs. That is gold. The only concern here is the holdout. If he's starting for the Chargers on Week 1, many people will be lucky they grabbed him at a discount.
Rich Piazza Fantasy Shed | There is more risk in drafting Gordon than there is with Elliot. Gordon is on the last year of his contract, and the Chargers have two viable running backs they can turn to in his absence. The urgency for the Chargers front office isn't as great to get a deal done like it is in Dallas with Ezekiel Elliot. There are plenty of RB-needy teams that have the current and future cap space available to make a trade if that's the direction the Chargers decide to take.
Nick Zylak Fantasy Football Advice | CMC is going to be a stud yet again this season. The former 4th overall pick now has 187 receptions over his first two seasons, including 107 last season. He also showed that he can produce in the TD department with 13 total TD's. There are two main knocks I have with him. One is the rushing yardage. He's a great RB, but he doesn't have the same sort of rushing yard upside as some of the other RB's do. The second is the TD's. The 13 TD's were great, but 12 of them occurred in weeks 7-13. That means that he had just one total TD in weeks 1/2/3/4/5/6/14/15/16. I'm not saying that he can't post more consistent numbers, but I trust the TD production of Kamara and Barkley just a little bit more. With all this being said, the dude is going to have 80+ receptions, and he's going to be involved every aspect of the offense. He needs to be taken in the top 5 of drafts. | I do not believe Melvin Gordon will sit out the entire season. If he does, then he'll be right back in this same situation next year. He'll still be under contract with the Chargers, they will still have the leverage, and he'll just be one year older, with a lot less money. What we could see happen is Gordon hold out for half the season, and then return to finish the year. That would allow him to become a FA next summer and get a new contract. The latest reports suggest that the teams aren't close to making a deal, and I find it hard to believe a team would want to give up a lot in trading for him. If this situation hasn't been resolved by the time your draft rolls around, then I don't see how you could feel good about drafting him. He'll be a stud when he plays, but missing out on your first or second round pick for potentially half a season is a major blow. There are too many elite options available in the first two rounds to justify taking him that early while this situation is still unresolved. |
Kyle Yates The Fantasy Footballers | CMC proved last year that he can be a workhorse back at the NFL level and I expect nothing less from him this season. If Newton's shoulder is completely healed, this Panthers offense has the potential to be dynamic and CMC will be at the center of it. Expect huge reception numbers yet again from McCaffrey! | While Melvin Gordon's health gives us cause for concern, there's no doubting his talent and production when he's on the field. Gordon gives you a safe floor week in and week out with his presence in the receiving game and this offense should only be better with Hunter Henry coming back into the fold. While Gordon's not in the tier of the guys above, such as Barkley, Zeke, CMC and Kamara, he's a solid RB1 option to lead your fantasy team to victory in 2019. |
