As long as Thomas' toe injury doesn't keep him off the field, he has a chance to carve out a role in Carolina's passing game now that Greg Olsen is out of town.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Dealing with a toe issue. Slightly down.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
With Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, Curtis Samuel and now Robby Anderson in front of Ian Thomas, he'll need the Panthers offense to be very strong to have any real fantasy relevance. He's a fine late round gamble but the upside is limited with so many mouths to feed.Greg Olsen arrives in Seattle in a strange situation. Will Dissly has looked very impressive when fit and Jacob Hollister every managed to thrive in the Seahawks offense. Now that duo is joined by Olsen along with rookies Colby Parkinson and Stephen Sullivan. It certainly looks like from that mess, the elder statesman Olsen will emerge. Olsen's contract will cost $7 million against the cap and he's clearly still got it, finishing TE13 in the nightmarish Panthers attack last year. Clearly this is a great situation (Dissly and Hollister combined would've been TE8 last year) and Olsen is the guy so take a gamble on him! Still not convinced? Well his ADP has him going at the end of the 15th round! How could you possibly go wrong?
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
With Greg Olsen out of town, Thomas walks into the starting role. What does that mean under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady? That's tough to say, but there's suddenly a lot of mouths to feed in this offense. Christian McCaffrey is Thomas' biggest issue, as there's been just one team over the last four years who've had their top running back and top tight end combine for more than 198 targets. Keep in mind that's the max. It's rare for teams to have that duo combine for more than 180 targets. So, when you see that McCaffrey saw 141 targets last year, that's a big issue for someone like Thomas. You aren't going to take targets away from McCaffrey to feed him. During Teddy Bridgewater's stint as the starter for the Saints last year, Jared Cook finished with 7, 21, 41, and 37 yards, though he did score twice. Those yardage totals are not what we look for out of streamers, and keep in mind there's more competition for targets in Carolina than there was in New Orleans. Thomas is someone you may want to stream from time to time, but I don't see a breakout season with McCaffrey on the field.Based on where Olsen's targets took place last year, he scored 20.5 fewer fantasy points than the average tight end would've, which was the worst mark in football, just ahead of Trey Burton. He's now 35 years old and wants to go to the booth soon enough. He was the Seahawks insurance to Will Dissly. Once they know Dissly is healthy, it's back to fantasy irrelevance for Olsen. If Dissly isn't ready for the start of the year, Olsen could have some streaming appeal.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
Nobody wants to talk about Ian Thomas inheriting a Hayden Hurst type of target share in Carolina and that's ok. If you miss out on premium (and mid round) tight ends, Thomas is an excellent scoop late.I don't expect Olsen to make it the entire season. I am more interested in scooping Will Dissly late and sitting him on the bench for the inevitable Olsen foot injury, then owning a TE1 in my league
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Every year is the year that Ian Thomas is supposed to break out and every year it doesn't happen. Well, Greg Olsen is gone, if it was ever going to happen, now is the time. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening. There are simply way too many mouths to feed in that Panthers offense for Thomas to stay consistent.Greg Olsen is now a Seahawk and will get to catch passes from Russell Wilson which is great but what's not great is Olsen's injury history, age, and competition. The Seahawks have two talented TE's in Will Dissly and Jacob Hollister and Olsen has been extremely prone to injury lately. I'd rather draft some of the younger guys going in this range than Olsen.
Kevin Wheeler
The Draft Zone
In the nine games over the last two seasons that Ian Thomas has played without Greg Olsen in the lineup, he has produced at a 62-619-5.3 pace on 6.1 targets per game. @4for4_John
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
With the departure of Greg Olsen, Thomas is next in line as the starter in Carolina. He's shown potential when he's gotten on the field previously and there are going to be plenty of targets available in this offense. With that being said, Thomas is nothing more than a back-end TE2 this season that could be streamed in plus matchups.Olsen might have enough in the tank for one final season in the NFL, but it's unlikely to amount to much from a fantasy perspective. Even if Olsen sees 80-plus targets, he lacks the athleticism now to turn them into anything of value for fantasy football. He'll be a fringe TE2/TE3 this season.

Despite getting up there in age, Olsen showed he still had some gas left in the tank in 2019, finishing as the 13th-ranked tight end in 1/2 PPR formats despite playing just 14 games and scoring just two touchdowns. Seattle isn't a bad place for tight ends, but with Will Dissly expected back and Jacob Hollister still on the roster, it's unlikely that Olsen will see his usual number of targets. He's worth drafting in leagues that give bonus points to tight ends but he's outside the TE1 range in standard-sized leagues.

Will step out of Olsen's shadow in 2020, and Joe Brady may be the perfect coordinator to unlock his athleticismIf Will Dissly's injury lingers or he goes down again, Olsen landed in an absolute prime location where he'd carve out top-12 value. For now, the room feels a little congested
