FantasyPros
As long as Thomas' toe injury doesn't keep him off the field, he has a chance to carve out a role in Carolina's passing game now that Greg Olsen is out of town. The 2019 rookie finished with a 36/311/2 receiving line on 47 targets in his first season, posting nearly identical numbers to veteran Kyle Rudolph in almost every statistical category except one: scoring. Rudolph found himself in the end zone six times, though he saw just one more target than Smith. Rudolph is on the back-nine of his career, and the ascending Smith could pass him on the depth chart as soon as this season. Minnesota's passing attack isn't prolific, but Smith is capable of posting strong numbers if he gets a bump in opportunity.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
It's difficult to get excited about a player coming off a season in which he failed to surpass five receptions or 60 yards while scoring only two touchdowns over 18 games, including playoffs. While Smith's fantasy upside is limited with Kyle Rudolph still on the roster, the 2019 second-round pick is expected to play a bigger role in Minnesota's offense in his second season.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Dealing with a toe issue. Slightly down. With questions about Justin Jefferson and the #2 receiving option in general, moving Irv up a bit. He could be the guy!
Kevin Tompkins
Fighting Chance Fantasy
With the 3rd easiest schedule from Weeks 1-8 and camp reports that Irv Smith is playing off the line in 12 personnel, Smith and Rudolph for me are ships passing in the night. It's easy to spot this breakout and you don't have to spend much to find out. He's a sneaky candidate to be the non-Adam Thielen leader in targets for the Vikings in 2020.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
With Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, Curtis Samuel and now Robby Anderson in front of Ian Thomas, he'll need the Panthers offense to be very strong to have any real fantasy relevance. He's a fine late round gamble but the upside is limited with so many mouths to feed.Irv Smith is starting to take over from Kyle Rudolph as the tight end to own in Minnesota. A second year breakout is certainly on the cards for the Vikings youngster and given Stefon Diggs is now out of town, there's every chance Smith gets a solid target share and that's worth betting on very late in drafts.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
With Greg Olsen out of town, Thomas walks into the starting role. What does that mean under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady? That's tough to say, but there's suddenly a lot of mouths to feed in this offense. Christian McCaffrey is Thomas' biggest issue, as there's been just one team over the last four years who've had their top running back and top tight end combine for more than 198 targets. Keep in mind that's the max. It's rare for teams to have that duo combine for more than 180 targets. So, when you see that McCaffrey saw 141 targets last year, that's a big issue for someone like Thomas. You aren't going to take targets away from McCaffrey to feed him. During Teddy Bridgewater's stint as the starter for the Saints last year, Jared Cook finished with 7, 21, 41, and 37 yards, though he did score twice. Those yardage totals are not what we look for out of streamers, and keep in mind there's more competition for targets in Carolina than there was in New Orleans. Thomas is someone you may want to stream from time to time, but I don't see a breakout season with McCaffrey on the field.I'm not certain how many people know Smith saw just one fewer target than his teammate Kyle Rudolph in 2019, but that was the case. The difference was their touchdowns, as Rudolph scored six times compared to Smith's two touchdowns. Will that change in 2020? Well, it wasn't due to lack of opportunity, as Smith saw 10 targets in the red zone compared to Rudolph's 11 targets. Touchdowns are a very fickle thing and they can flip-flop this year. Smith is the one ascending up, while Rudolph is moving towards the end of his tenure.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
Nobody wants to talk about Ian Thomas inheriting a Hayden Hurst type of target share in Carolina and that's ok. If you miss out on premium (and mid round) tight ends, Thomas is an excellent scoop late.If the Vikes use Smith out of the slot and out wide, it would be a great way to create matchups and scheme him into scoring plays. I am hoping the team delivers on this potential.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Every year is the year that Ian Thomas is supposed to break out and every year it doesn't happen. Well, Greg Olsen is gone, if it was ever going to happen, now is the time. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening. There are simply way too many mouths to feed in that Panthers offense for Thomas to stay consistent.Irv Smith Jr. is one of many young talented TE's that could be in for a breakout season. There's only one problem when it comes to Smith - Kyle Rudolph. Even while they produced nearly identical totals in reception and yards, it was Rudolph catching all the TDs. As long as Rudolph is there it's going to be tough for Smith to get consistent work, but I think his upside is worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
In the nine games over the last two seasons that Ian Thomas has played without Greg Olsen in the lineup, he has produced at a 62-619-5.3 pace on 6.1 targets per game. @4for4_John2019: Played 53.4% of snaps in the slot, 76.6% Catch Rate, 107.7 QBR, target share: 7.6/ 20.5% Irv Smith Jr. had 47 targets in 2019 as a 21-year-old rookie. The Vikings are likely to pass more next year and lack proven receiving weapons. TEs who were 21-year-old rookies record a TE1 season almost 60% of the time in Year 2. @JackMiller02
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
With the departure of Greg Olsen, Thomas is next in line as the starter in Carolina. He's shown potential when he's gotten on the field previously and there are going to be plenty of targets available in this offense. With that being said, Thomas is nothing more than a back-end TE2 this season that could be streamed in plus matchups.Unfortunately, the opportunity doesn't exactly match the talent for Irv Smith...at least for right now. Rudolph is still ahead of him on this depth chart and this isn't an offense that's projected to have a high passing volume. Smith's unlikely to have any fantasy relevance in 2020, unless Rudolph were to miss time. He can remain on your waiver wire for the time being.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Smith played a fair amount in his rookie season, but he's still second fiddle to Kyle Rudolph. Although the two tight ends essentially split targets last year, Smith was used fairly closer to the line of scrimmage and almost never had a chance to break big plays. He may see a bit more usage now with plenty of vacated targets in the absence of Stefon Diggs, but he's nothing better than a low-end TE2.
