FanDuel MLB Lineup Advice: Wednesday (8/24)

Buster Posey is a gimme against lefties at this price

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the FanDuel value plays advice. We have 10 games on the slate tonight and there only appears to be one game where we need to keep an eye on the weather (PHI at CHW). Still, be sure to check the weather later in the day in case anything else develops. Let’s go ahead and take a look at my lineup for tonight.

Pitcher

Yu Darvish (TEX): $10,500 at CIN
An argument could be made either way to use Yu Darvish or Jose Fernandez, but I’m leaning towards Darvish at $300 cheaper and in a better matchup. Darvish gets a huge boost going to a National League park, since he will not have to face a DH. Darvish has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season (when healthy) with a 11.59 K/9 and a 2.96 xFIP. As long as he can navigate around Joey Votto, he should have no problems dominating the Reds tonight.

Other Notable Players

Catcher

Buster Posey (SF): $3,100 at LAD
Anytime Buster Posey is facing a left-handed pitcher you should consider inserting him into your lineup. Posey currently has a 0.377 wOBA and a 0.207 ISO against lefties this season and he is not expensive at all tonight. Rich Hill has been great this season, but I am expecting him to be slightly rusty after not making a start in over a month.

Other Notable Players

First Base

Justin Morneau (CHW): $2,700 vs. PHI
I rarely go the value route at first base in cash games, but tonight will be the exception. Justin Morneau has been solid in the month of August with a 0.350 wOBA and a 0.254 ISO. Tonight he has a decent matchup against Jerad Eickhoff who has allowed a 0.343 wOBA to left-handed hitters and who has been awful in the month of August with a 6.43 FIP.

Other Notable Players

Second Base

Brian Dozier (MIN): $3,900 vs. DET
Brian Dozier has been on an absolute tear in the month of August with a 0.447 wOBA and a 0.440 ISO. On top of that, he has crushed left-handed pitching this season with a 0.446 wOBA and a 0.379 ISO. Even though Matt Boyd appears to have been pitching great lately, advanced statistics suggest otherwise. Boyd has a FIP of 5.10 in August and there is a good chance that his luck runs out tonight against the Twins, who have been one of the best hitting teams over the past few weeks.

Other Notable Players

Third Base

Jake Lamb (ARI): $3,000 vs. ATL
Jake Lamb is way too cheap in a matchup against Julio Teheran at home. Lamb has a 0.414 wOBA and a 0.339 ISO at Chase Field. Similar to Matt Boyd, Julio Teheran’s numbers against left-handed hitters seem to show that he is getting lucky since his wOBA against left-handed batters is only 0.291, but his xFIP is 5.58.

Other Notable Players

Shortstop

Freddy Galvis (PHI): $2,400 at CHW
Instead of sugar coating this recommendation, I’m going to admit this is strictly a punt play. Freddy Galvis has not been great this season. However, there is hope for tonight since he will be facing James Shields. Shields has been terrible this season against left-handed hitters with a 0.371 wOBA and a 4.68 BB/9.

Other Notable Players

Outfielders

Christian Yelich (MIA): $3,400 vs. KC
Christian Yelich has been great this season against right-handed pitchers with a 0.399 wOBA and a 0.224 ISO. He should continue that trend tonight against Dillon Gee, who has been awful against left-handed hitters this season. Gee has allowed a 0.366 wOBA and a 3.74 BB/9 against lefties this year.

Odubel Herrera (PHI): $2,900 at CHW
Another option we can use against Shields is Odubel Herrera. Herrera has been excellent this season against right-handed pitchers on the road with a 0.365 wOBA and a 0.189 ISO.

Miguel Sano (MIN): $3,100 vs. DET
I already mentioned how we can pick on Boyd and Miguel Sano is another lefty smasher who we can use against him. Just like several other Twins’ hitters, Sano has been on fire in the month of August with a 0.365 wOBA and a 0.333 ISO. On top of that, he has done extremely well against left-handed pitchers this season with a 0.386 wOBA and a 0.241 ISO.
