5 Deep Hitters to Pick Up (Fantasy Baseball)

5 Deep Hitters to Pick Up (Fantasy Baseball)

Over the last 11 weeks, we have suggested hitters for you to consider adding in deep mixed leagues and AL/NL-only formats. Below are five more for your consideration. All of these players are owned in less than 10% of leagues.

Mallex Smith (OF – TB) 7%
The 24-year-old was recalled from Triple-A with the news that Kevin Kiermaier will be out of action for 6-to-8 weeks. Expect Smith to see extended playing time in center field.

There should be an immediate interest in the speedster in all formats of fantasy baseball, thanks to his reputation as an elite base stealer. Smith stole 144 bases over two seasons in the minors from 2014 and has already swiped four in the four games since his recall. He has been hitting at the top of the Rays’ lineup and got on base four times (scoring twice) in the win over the Athletics on Sunday.

Lewis Brinson (OF – MIL) 8%
The Brewers called up their top prospect on Saturday, and he walked twice and stole a base in his MLB debut. Lewis Brinson is the No. 13 prospect according to MLB Pipeline with 30 home run and 30 stolen base potential at his peak. Brinson is a powerful hitter with an improving approach at the plate, which has resulted in more walks and fewer strikeouts each year as he progressed through the minors.

The former first rounder from the 2012 draft has a .900 OPS with six home runs, 13 doubles, and seven stolen bases in 45 Triple-A games this season. Based on the confidence shown in his debut, expect Brinson to have fantasy relevance in all formats.

Howie Kendrick (2B/OF – PHI) 9%
The veteran second baseman is expected to see the bulk of the playing time with Cesar Hernandez banged up and on the 10-day DL. Since returning to the lineup on May 29, having missed six weeks with a strained oblique, Kendrick is hitting .350 with two home runs and three stolen bases.

The 33-year-old is a boring fantasy option, but he is hitting towards the top of the Phillies’ lineup and has the proven ability to chip in with contributions in all categories. Kendrick’s multi-position eligibility means he will play every day, shifting to the outfield when Andres Blanco gets the nod at second base.

Eric Sogard (2B – MIL) 5%
The Brewers’ Eric Sogard never reached the heights of being considered a boring fantasy option. In six seasons in the big leagues, he hit .233 with a .609 OPS. There has never been a reason to get excited about Sogard.

This year, in 24 games for the Brewers, the 31-year-old has transformed into a stud, slashing .353/.476/.574 with a career-high three home runs and two stolen bases. He has been playing second, third, and short as Craig Counsell tries to keep his hot bat in the lineup. Sogard is leading off for Milwaukee, and his .476 OBP leads MLB (min 80 PA).

Lonnie Chisenhall (OF – CLE) 4%
Before this season, Chisenhall had an underwhelming .724 OPS for his six-year MLB career. He has always shown the promise to be a valuable fantasy player, and for stretches, the 28-year-old has delivered, but those stretches have always been frustratingly short.

Chisenhall is in a strict platoon this season, having only had 15 at-bats against left-handed pitchers, but his .949 OPS vs. RHP ranks in the top-30. He should be high on the list of players to consider adding in daily formats when Cleveland is facing a right-handed pitcher. Chisenhall has five home runs, three doubles, 10 runs, and 10 RBIs over his last 10 starts.
