FanDuel MLB Value Plays: Monday (7/3)

Welcome to the Monday edition of the FanDuel MLB value plays. Tonight we have a mid-sized, eight-game slate to work with on this first Monday in July. As always, be sure to check out the weather and the team lineups throughout the day. Let’s go ahead and take a look at my favorite value options for today.

Pitcher

Adam Wainwright (STL): $7,700 vs. MIA
Pitching is truly a mess on the main slate with no clear cut pitcher to spend up for tonight. One pitcher who we can get for a discount and who I like for GPPs tonight is Adam Wainwright. Outside of two starts in June, Wainwright has been pretty solid since the middle of May, and he has pitched much better at home this season than he has on the road. In 47.2 innings of work this season at Busch Stadium, Wainwright has a 2.64 ERA compared to an 8.36 ERA on the road. The Marlins definitely have a couple of guys in their lineup who could ruin Wainwright’s day. However, the Marlins only rank 21st in the league in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers this season.

Catcher

Russell Martin (TOR): $2,400 at NYY
The Blue Jays are continuing to stick Russell Martin in the two-hole of their lineup, which is a great spot for a value catcher. Not only is he in a great spot in the order, he has been doing well against opposing right-handed pitchers with a 0.346 wOBA. Masahiro Tanaka has struggled against opposing right-handed hitters, allowing a 0.367 wOBA and a 1.95 HR/9.

First Base

John Jaso (PIT): $2,700 at PHI
John Jaso has been a pretty steady value option over the past few years, with a career 0.351 wOBA against opposing right-handed pitchers. Aaron Nola has been okay this season, but he has really struggled with his control against left-handed hitters, allowing a 4.50 BB/9.

Second Base

Alen Hanson (CWS): $2,200 at OAK
Value at second base is pretty ugly on this slate, so I will definitely be spending up here tonight. If you are courageous and would like to punt this position, I recommend doing so with Alen Hanson. I probably cannot convince you to use him by rattling off his statistics. However, he has been hitting leadoff for the White Sox in each of their last three games against right-handed pitchers. At only $2,200, you really only need him to get on base and score a run to pay off his salary.

Third Base

Kyle Seager (SEA): $2,700 vs. KC
The power stroke really has not been there for Kyle Seager so far in 2017, with only 10 home runs in his first 79 games. However, I think it’s only a matter of time until the ball starts flying over the wall for him considering he has a hard contact rate of 41.1% against right-handed pitchers. Ian Kennedy has been decent so far this season, but I see some negative regression coming since his hard contact rate allowed to left-handed hitters is currently sitting at 45.5% this season.

Shortstop

Andrelton Simmons (LAA): $3,100 at MIN
Shortstop is another position where I will likely spend up tonight. Since there is not a pricey pitching option to use, we really don’t have to punt here. The cheapest option I would recommend using tonight is Andrelton Simmons. Prior to this season, Simmons was known much more for his glove than his bat. However, he has been decent this season and has found himself in the middle of the order more times than not. He’s probably never going provide you the upside to take down a GPP at this salary, but he does make for a decent cash game option since he does not strike out often.

Outfielders

Chris Young (BOS): $2,400 at TEX
If you have been consistently reading my value articles this season, there is a pretty good chance you have seen me mention Chris Young a few times. He is my go-to value option whenever the Red Sox are facing a left-handed pitcher since his career numbers against lefties are excellent. Tonight he has a decent matchup against Martin Perez, who has allowed a 0.356 wOBA to opposing right-handed hitters this season.

Jose Martinez (STL): $2,400 vs. MIA
Lately, Jose Martinez has been finding himself in the middle of the Cardinals’ order when they are facing a left-handed pitcher. The sample size is not large, but he has done pretty well in 33 plate appearance against opposing left-handed pitchers this season. I would not try to attack Jeff Locke too hard since he rarely blows up, but at the same time, we do not have to completely avoid him if we need to use a Cardinals’ bat to fill a spot in our lineup.

Ben Gamel (SEA): $3,100 vs. KC
Since we really don’t have to dive too deep for value players tonight, I’m going to use another player who is above $3,000 in this value article. Ben Gamel has been excellent this season for the Mariners, with a 0.380 wOBA against opposing right-handed pitchers. On top of that, he has been hitting in the two-hole for the majority of this season.
