Jay Bruce to open the season with Mets

by Chris Zolli | Wed, Jan 25th 7:51am EST

Amidst trade rumors, the Mets are ready to move forward with Jay Bruce as their starting RF for the 2017 season. The Mets picked up the option on Bruce's 2017 contract in case Yoenis Cespedes left New York, but with Cespedes returning, there is now a logjam in the outfield. Bruce was acquired at the trade deadline from the Reds and had a .219/.294/.391 slash line in 50 games with the Mets. (New York Post)

Fantasy Impact:

A poor 2016 season with New York and the prospect of former first-round pick Michael Conforto in RF was thought to make the soon-to-be 30-year-old Bruce an expendable piece. While the Mets were very open to trading Bruce, he did have an .875 OPS and 25 home runs with the Reds before being acquired by New York and, with his 33 HR for the season, has 25 or more home runs in six of his last seven seasons. Whether or not the Mets keep Bruce, he is a cheap source of power and a Mets lineup that includes Bruce and Cespedes in the middle may be one that has good run production.
