Fantasy Impact:

This is a shocking development considering Swihart's former prospect status. He was Boston's 26th overall selection in the 2011 draft and widely viewed as an integral part of the team's future at catcher, particularly given the organization's fondness for his bat. His slow start and defensive deficiencies may have resulted in the team parting ways. Swihart hit .231 with one home run through 26 at-bats. Nevertheless, teams will likely be scrambling to claim the 27-year-old off waivers. Veteran backstop Sandy Leon has been activated from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move.
