Drew Smyly works out of the pen on Thursday, whiffs eight

by Jon Mathisen | Cubs Correspondent | Fri, Sep 11th 12:11pm EDT

Drew Smyly worked four innings of relief on Thursday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while whiffing eight and walking one as the Giants fell to the Padres 6-1.

Fantasy Impact:

This was Smyly's first appearance in over a month as he was placed on the IL in early August with a finger strain. He relieved Trevor Cahill and managed to strikeout eight Padres in four innings. His only earned run was a Jorge Ona solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. As of now, the left-hander is expected to keep working out of the bullpen so he won't hold much fantasy value in leagues that don't factor in holds. In four appearances (two starts), Smyly has a 2.92 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 19:5 K/BB ratio.
