Hanley Ramirez asked to trim down

by Chris McCoy | Wed, Oct 7th 9:58am EDT

New Red Sox baseball chief Dave Dombrowski has reportedly asked Hanley Ramirez to shed 15-20 lbs over the off season. The expectation was confirmed by interim manager Torey Lovullo “That’€™s our expectation. I dont have the paperwork in front of me but I think it was 15 or 20 pounds lighter, that’€™s what was asked of him.” Ramirez had intentionally bulked up after signing with the Red Sox in preparation for his transition to the outfield. Fantasy Impact:

Overall health seems to be the major driving force behind the organization's request that Ramirez drop down a weight class. However, Ramirez has always had a hard time staying healthy regardless of his size or position. What the weight loss may do is keep Hanley from trying to be a power hitter, and allow him to get back to what he does best which is spray doubles all over the field. His 12 doubles in 2015 was a career low and nearly a third of what he put up in 2014 (35 doubles) while posting a usable .817 OPS over 128 games.
