Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Jean Segura, Alex Wood, Jayson Werth

Although initial X-rays were negative on Mike Trout’s injured left thumb, an MRI revealed ligament damage that would require surgery and at least a month of recovery for the two-time AL MVP and perennial first-overall fantasy baseball pick.

Luckily for fantasy owners, there were no substantial injuries to blue chip players like Trout in week nine of the MLB season, with perhaps the most severe injury being concussion-related symptoms for New York Yankee outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

Here are some other injuries we are tracking from last week’s games, including an AC joint injury that might set off some red flags for Alex Wood owners.

Jean Segura (SS – SEA)
A misstep sliding into second base on Thursday resulted in a sprained ankle and subsequent trip to the 10-day disabled list for Jean Segura. Diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, the more severe of the ankle injuries, Segura will likely take longer to rehab than 10 days, but told reporters on Saturday that he is recovering well and does not anticipate a long-term absence.

According to Emily Giambalvo and Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Segura will begin doing some activities if he feels better over the course of the next few days, but is still wearing a walking boot and is receiving treatment.

With a .341 batting average and 29 runs scored in just 182 at-bats, Segura has been an excellent fantasy option in his first season with Seattle. We recommend stashing him on your bench or on your DL if you have a spot available. Brandon Crawford, Javier Baez, and Didi Gregorius as viable fill-in options for the next few weeks.

Alex Wood (SP – LAD)
With an impressive 6-0 record and 1.69 ERA over his first 10 starts, Alex Wood has been one of the biggest starting pitching surprises of 2017. Talent has never been an issue for Wood, who owns a respectable 3.21 career ERA over six big league seasons between Atlanta and Los Angeles.

Instead, injuries have been the problem for Wood since joining the Dodgers, with an elbow ailment forcing the former Georgia Bulldog to miss eight weeks in 2016. His latest injury, inflammation of the SC joint, which connects the sternum to the clavicle, forced Wood to the 10-day disabled list and a premature return home for examination by team doctors.

Manager Dave Roberts first told reporters that he thought Wood would only miss one start, but the latest news of further testing has put that possibility in question.

Jayson Werth (OF – WAS)
The veteran left fielder fouled a ball off his foot on Saturday and was still requiring the use of crutches on Sunday according to Dan Kolko via Twitter. Kolko wrote that X-rays were negative and there are no broken bones in Werth’s foot, but he is still in obvious pain and could require a trip to the disabled list.

Billy Hamilton (OF – CIN)
Major League Baseball’s leading base stealer missed Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury and is currently listed as day-to-day. Hamilton left Saturday’s game early and was not able to recover in time for Sunday’s rubber match against Atlanta.

The positive news is that the injury is not to Hamilton’s leg, which would for obvious reasons be a significant issue for a player that makes his money with his speed. But a shoulder injury could still limit him and should be watched carefully.

Josh Harrison (2B/OF – PIT)
A calf injury forced Harrison to leave Sunday’s game against the Mets in the seventh inning. As of Sunday evening, there are no updates on Harrison’s status and whether or not he will be in the lineup when the Pirates travel to Baltimore on Tuesday.

Mike Napoli (1B – TEX)
The bearded one left Saturday’s game against Houston in the fourth inning with back spasms, with Joey Gallo replacing Napoli at first base for the Rangers. Napoli missed Sunday’s game as well and will no doubt utilize the team’s off day on Monday to rest his ailing back.

From a fantasy perspective, Napoli has been a bust in his return to Texas and should only be owned in AL-only leagues. His injury could open the door to more playing time for Ryan Rua in the outfield.

Dustin Pedroia (2B – BOS)
The laser show is out of commission for at least 10 days, as Pedroia was placed on the DL with a wrist injury that was sustained diving back to first in a May 30th game against the White Sox.

An MRI and X-rays revealed no structural damage or fractures in the wrist, making a quick recovery for Pedroia highly likely. Although Pedroia has only two home runs in his first 171 at-bats, he has driven in a respectable 21 runs and is batting .292 on the season.

Justin Verlander (SP – DET)
Verlander left Sunday’s game against the White Sox early with groin tightness, but manager Brad Ausmus sounded optimistic after the game that his ace pitcher would not miss his next scheduled start in the rotation. We will keep an eye on this one, but it does not appear to be serious, and Verlander is hopeful to start on the road against Boston on Friday.

Jacoby Ellsbury (OF – NYY)
The Yankees shut down Jacoby Ellsbury after the outfielder reported headaches stemming from a concussion sustained on May 24th when he ran into the wall at Yankee Stadium. The team will have Ellsbury visit with a neurologist when they return home next week.

Ellsbury was already placed on the seven-day disabled list due to the injury. He was primed to start taking batting practice, but the team opted to shut him down for further testing instead since his symptoms continued.

Updating Previous Injuries

Joc Pederson (OF – LAD) Concussion
Pederson resumed baseball activities on Saturday and is making progress on returning from a concussion and neck injury. According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the team will likely send Pederson on a rehab assignment before activating him.

Ian Kinsler (2B – DET) Hamstring
Kinsler is progressing well and has undergone “intense” running drills according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. Fenech wrote on June 1st that Tigers manager Brad Ausmus would be “shocked” if Kinsler did not return when eligible on June 6th.
