Mitchell Trubisky expected to open as starting QB

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitchell Trubisky seems poised to win the starting job ahead of Week 1, per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. (Source: The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: As Kaboly writes, “Unless Trubisky gets hurt or plays terribly in camp and the preseason, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario where he doesn’t start the season as the No. 1. How long he stays there will depend on how he plays.” Although Kenny Pickett is waiting in the wings and certainly represents Pittsburgh’s future, the team seems to be in no rush to deploy him. Pickett will open the year as Trubisky’s backup and only see reps if the former Bear and Bill struggles or gets hurt.

Nico Collins standing out during spring workouts

Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins is making a significant impression ahead of his second season in the NFL. According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, quarterback Davis Mills labeled Collins as a player who has stood out this spring, explaining that he has a “good grasp of this offense” and “his talent is off the charts.” (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: Collins generated plenty of hype ahead of his rookie season but ultimately underperformed due to injuries and the woeful state of the Texans’ offense. He still salvaged 33 catches, 446 yards, and one touchdown through 14 games. Heading into 2022, the Texans will look to get him even more involved as their clear-cut No. 2 wideout. He has some bench appeal in deeper fantasy leagues this coming season.

Deebo Samuel has not rescinded trade request

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, San Francisco 49ers’ WR Deebo Samuel has not rescinded his trade request from earlier this offseason. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers earlier this offseason reportedly due to his desire for a new contract and frustration related to his role within the offense. Samuel skipped the 49ers’ OTAs, but he attended the team’s mandatory June minicamp, making it seem as though he and the team had possibly made amends. San Francisco GM John Lynch has publicly stated that he has no intention of trading his star WR, so only time will tell how the stalemate may end. After an injury-riddled 2020 season, Samuel broke out in 2021 to finish as the WR3 in fantasy. Samuel’s fantasy value largely comes from his role as a WR/RB hybrid that provides a plethora of touches that maximizes his elite ability to force missed tackles to break off big gains.

Jamison Crowder impressing while competing for slot receiver job

Bills wide receiver Jamison Crowder has impressed as he competes for the slot receiver role in Buffalo’s offense, according to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: Although Isaiah McKenzie may have been the top candidate to replace Cole Beasley in the slot, Crowder has certainly made a name for himself since his rough departure from the Jets. Over three years in New York, he caught 188 passes for 1,979 yards and 14 touchdowns. Although his production has declined over each of those three campaigns, perhaps he’ll reverse course and provide steady fantasy value while catching passes from Josh Allen (rather than the inconsistent carousel of quarterbacks with the Jets).
