Adam Wainwright likely headed back to disabled list as elbow pain persists

by Mike Maher | Sun, May 13th 9:29pm EDT

Adam Wainwright felt pain in his ailing elbow while warming up but started against the San Diego Padres anyway. As it turns out, he aggravated his existing elbow injury and is likely headed back to the disabled list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. As for the start, Wainwright lasted just 2 1/3 innings, walking six batters and allowing two earned runs before being removed. The six walks were a career-high. (Deriick Goold on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

While nothing is official yet, consider Wainwright out for the foreseeable future. His velocity was way down on Sunday, with versions of his fastball hovering around the low 80s, and his control was clearly all over the place. For his part, Wainwright expects "to be a force" for the Cardinals down the stretch this season, but it is fair to wonder whether, at nearly 37 years-old and with arm troubles, Wainwright's days of being a force are behind him.
