Pitcher
Michael Wacha (STL): $7,700 vs. TOR
After a down year in 2016 with an ERA of 5.09, Wacha seems much more like his old self again. So far in three starts, Wacha holds a 2.41 ERA with 17 strikeouts. Tuesday he faces a Blue Jays’ team that has lost six of their last 10 games and eight of their players to the DL including Josh Donaldson (calf) and Troy Tulowitzki (hamstring). In addition, the Jays starters have had a rough month of April. Here are some averages so far vs. right-handed pitching: Kendrys Morales (.216) Justin Smoak (.205), Jose Bautista (.160) and Devon Travis (.083)…Yikes! Need a few more reasons to take Wacha? Toronto is fourth in MLB for the least amount of runs scored with 63. They rank 23rd in hits and 27th in RBIs. This gives Wacha more fuel for your GPP match-ups.
Catcher
Jett Bandy (MIL): $2,800 vs. CIN
In DFS, they say “ride the wave until it crashes.” Milwaukee’s Jett Bandy is still riding the wave high batting .400 over his last seven games with three home runs. And his name is “Jett,” how cool is that? But, if you are looking for more solid reasons to take Bandy, let’s glance at his opponent. Scott Feldman has a 9.00 ERA in his only appearance at Miller Park. Last time he faced the Brewers he gave up two earned runs and walked five. Miller still has its place in the top 10 parks for home runs. For the price, I’m game.
First Base
Ryan Zimmerman (WAS): $4,100 @ COL
One of the lesser-owned players in the Nats/Rockies game will be Ryan Zimmerman. Most think of him as a player who is passed his prime and always hurt. Well, right now he is batting .387 with six homers and is hitting the cover off righties and lefties alike. Now, $4,100 might not seem like a value play, but he is $500 cheaper than the top guy (Anthony Rizzo) and cheaper than others playing in this Coors game. He has an unreal 10 RBIs in just his last seven games alone and is batting .500. Woah! Plug him in.
Second Base
Cesar Hernandez (PHI): $3,600 vs. MIA
Wei-Yin Chen had an excellent outing against the Mariners. He threw seven innings of no-hit ball. One note, he only struck out two and was pummeled for six earned runs against the Mets the week before. He will face Cesar Hernandez and the rebuilding Phillies. Sure, many DFS players might be jumping on Chen, but I don’t expect him to go through this one unscathed. This could be the breakout year for Hernandez. He is batting .338 on the season, .344 from the right side of the plate. He is 5-for-12 lifetime against Chen. Those are pretty good odds in your GPP lineups.
Third Base
Travis Shaw (MIL): $3,600 vs. CIN
The Brewers are at home in homer-friendly Miller Park. Shaw is a great addition from the Red Sox and adds a little punch to the Brew Crew lineup. Over the last seven days, Shaw has 10 RBIs and three bombs. He will face Scott Feldman and is 2-for-5 with a homer against the righty. If Feldman leaves a meatball up there for Shaw, he will take it yard!
Shortstop
Chris Owings (ARI): $2,800 vs. SDP
If you are sweating over the idea of paying up for a shortstop, give Owings a look. This scrappy player is in a favorable hitting environment at Chase Field and is batting .308 on the season. Better yet, he is hitting .318 versus southpaws and is facing Clayton Richard who he has had success against. Owings is 3-for-8 vs. Richard with an RBI and no strikeouts. A nice add that allows you to get bigger bats in elsewhere.
Outfield
Jacoby Ellsbury (NYY): $3,600 @ BOS
Who is Rick Porcello? Is he the Cy Young Award-winning pitcher we saw last season? Or is he the lifetime 4.22 ERA pitcher we are used to? I guess we shall see as the season progresses, but right now, he has an ERA of 5.32 in four starts. One guy to consider if you are betting against Porcello is the often overlooked Ellsbury. Injury and age are factors in Ellsbury’s decline over the past few seasons, but he is off to a good start for the Yankees thus far. He is batting .333 on the year and .375 over his last seven games. He has some good numbers off Porcello including 12 hits in 31 at-bats and four home runs. It’s always excitement when the Yankees come to Fenway, and you can bet adrenalin will be running high.
Yasmany Tomas (ARI): $3,200 vs. SDP
DFS players start to drool when they see that there is a home game at Coors. But last season, Chase Field in Arizona actually had a slightly larger home run rate than Coors. Knowing that, instead of paying up for Charlie Blackmon, why not consider Tomas? Tomas is batting .290 with four home runs on the season. Over the past three seasons, Tomas has a .325 average with 15 home runs vs. left-handed pitching. He will face southpaw Clayton Richard at Chase in front of the hometown D’back fans. Richard has a career 5.20 ERA at Chase. Tomas is 5-for-10 lifetime vs. Richard which includes a homer and three RBIs. No reason to doubt Tomas.
Scott Van Slyke (LOS): $2,300 @ SFG
If you are jumping on the Coors and Chase games and need cheap filler for your lineups, check to see if Dodgers’ Scott Van Slyke is starting. In the last three years, Van Slyke owns a .282 average with 12 homers vs. left-handed pitching. But, it’s AT&T Park you say. Yep, AT&T had the lowest percentage of home runs over any ballpark last season. But, AT&T also fell in the top 10 for doubles and triples, and during the same time period, Van Slyke had 67 hits and 17 doubles against lefties. A double with a few men on base can rack up some nice points at a low, low cost!
