Grading Trades: Bryce Harper, George Springer, Todd Frazier

Grading Trades: Bryce Harper, George Springer, Todd Frazier

It’s that time again – time for our weekly Grading Trades column, and you know what that means. That’s right, we get to take a look at this week’s trades that went down across the fantasy baseball world and decide how much or how little we like them or provide some feedback on trade offers you might be a bit torn on. As always, thanks to all who submitted their trades to us and keep on keepin’ on.

My team is off to a bad start. I didn’t do enough prep and ended up with quite a few declining players. I’m looking to trade either Adrian Gonzalez or Todd Frazier for either another corner infielder or outfielder. If you can provide me some names of players that you think would be a fair trade but may give me a slight advantage that would be great.

This is a tough sell. Most fantasy owners know A-Gon is on the decline and top Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Cody Bellinger has been called up. Not necessarily to replace Gonzalez, but the time is coming and it’s coming soon. In my mind, you couldn’t even trade Gonzalez straight up for Frazier because it would be a bit one-sided.

My advice to you is to target underperforming players you think will rebound such as Kenta Maeda (I know you didn’t mention pitching, but beggars can’t be choosers when trying to flip A-Gon) or Carlos Gonzalez because your options will be limited.

Frazier will have the most trade value, so you could feasibly pry loose a CarGo or Jose Abreu from someone for him. A-Gon, you’ll either be stuck with him or see if you couldn’t wait for him to string together a decent stretch and make a play for an Adam Eaton, Jayson Heyward, or even Corey Dickerson.

In an H2H points league, dynasty, and I’ve been offered Matt Wieters, Masahiro Tanaka, and Trevor Bauer for George Springer, Taijuan Walker, and Matt Harvey. This is a bad trade, right? Travis D’Arnaud is my other catcher.

Short answer; no doubt. This is horrible for your team.

Long answer; Trevor Bauer isn’t a game changer, and half the time he’s only fantasy relevant in the sense you need a 4th or 5th starting pitcher on your team. He’s not terrible, but you could likely trade for someone similar in performance to him and give up less in return – or wait to scoop him up on the waiver wire if he ever hits it. Tanaka carries the weight of constant injury risk and Wieters may be hitting well right now, but he’s an aging catcher who wouldn’t crack the top 10 if the position wasn’t so thin. Plus, go snag Francisco Cervelli. He’s wholly uninspiring but incredibly consistent so he won’t hurt you if you’re looking for another catcher.

George Springer, Taijuan Waker, and Matt Harvey are all players that could have performances throughout the season that could single-handedly win your matchup. What you would be receiving in return doesn’t even come close. This other owner either has no clue how to evaluate player values or is simply trying to take you for a fool.

It’s a trap! Don’t do it.

Was just offered a trade in a 12 team H2H league for Bryce Harper. Either Corey Kluber or Jacob deGrom + C. Yelich + A.J. Ramos. My other SP’s are Stephen Strasburg, Gerrit Cole, Kenta Maeda and James Paxton. That would leave my OF with Ryan Braun, Starling Marte, Yasiel Puig and Christian Yelich.

Wowza!

This is the type of trade that could set a team up for years if it’s a keeper league. Regardless of whether it is or isn’t, I believe you are being offered solid market value for Bryce Harper. We all know what Harper is capable of and he’s just getting started, in my opinion.

Effectively you would be getting a top 10 starting pitcher, a top 20 outfielder, and a decent enough closer in return for Harper. I’m generally not a fan of being on the receiving end of trades where I’m giving up the absolute best player on my team for three or four other players, but you wouldn’t be getting garbage back.

If this were up to me, I’d accept the deal but I’d want Kluber over deGrom. Your team receives a major boost to basically all pitching categories, including picking up a closer who should keep his job all season long, and an outfielder that contributes in every offensive category, to an extent.
