Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Kenneth Walker, DeAndre Hopkins, Robert Tonyan (2022)

Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Kenneth Walker, DeAndre Hopkins, Robert Tonyan (2022)

Entering Week 7 means we’re inching closer to your league’s trade deadline. And through six games, you should have a good idea of where your team stands. You’re either at the top of your league and maybe one piece away, or you’re in the middle of the pack and need to swing a big trade to make the playoffs.

Luckily, FantasyPros has you covered. Not only is there the ‘Who Should I Trade?’ tool where you can get instant trade feedback but every week in this space, we’ll dig even deeper into players that should be moved. There will be the classic one-for-one deals but also deals where multiple pieces would equate to one piece which will be indicated with a ‘-plus’ next to the players’ name.

The Trade: Rhamondre Stevenson (RB – NE) for Kenneth Walker (RB – SEA)

The Reasoning: Even before the injury to Patriots running back Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson was showing signs of breaking out. Besides Week 1, Stevenson averaged at least 4.7 yards-per-carry in every game while seeing his carries go up every week from a season-low of eight in that first game to 25 in Week 5 (which was also the first game Harris missed). Stevenson followed that game up with 19 more carries, two of which resulted in a score. He’s still involved in the passing game too, averaging 3.5 targets per game.

Will it last? It’s not yet known when Harris will return, but hamstring injuries (such as the one he has) can linger and easily be re-aggravated. And even when Harris returns, Stevenson has played well enough to earn a bigger role.

But there is another name out there that’s had a similar path to fantasy relevance this season but has a much better chance of sticking around. Kenneth Walker missed most of his first pre-season in the league with a hernia injury, which undoubtedly affected his fantasy draft position. It allowed incumbent Rashaad Penny to firm up his role as the starter heading into the season while Walker was physically catching up. Case in point, Walker failed to see double-digit carries in his first four games. But the injury bug struck Seattle’s backfield and knocked out Penny after he broke his leg which teed up Walker’s role. Walker took full advantage in his first game as the starter, carrying the rock 21 times for 97 yards and a score. Walker’s new role coupled with the surprisingly good Seattle offense means Walker could be an RB1 real soon.

The Trade: Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DET) for DeAndre Hopkins (WR – ARI)-plus

The Reasoning: Seasoned fantasy players saw the Amon-Ra St. Brown breakout coming. The 2021 fourth-round pick was one of the most productive rookie receivers and despite the Lions signing DJ Chark and drafting Jameson Williams, was still the de facto WR1 in Detroit. He didn’t disappoint as he totaled at least six receptions and 60 yards in each of his first three games in 2022 and scored three times. Then the injury bug struck, with a banged-up ankle knocking him out of Week 4 and slowing him down in Week 5 before the Lions were able to give him some rest during their bye this past week.

And while time off will give St. Brown’s body time to heal, it’s done the same for other Lions plates missing in action. D’Andre Swift is expected back after missing a few weeks with a shoulder injury. Then there’s the first-rounder Jameson Williams who appears set to make an appearance sooner rather than later from the torn ACL he suffered in January. The point is, St. Brown will not have the targets all to himself as he may have before.

Meanwhile, DeAndre Hopkins is set to return to the Cardinals lineup after serving a six-game suspension to start the season. More importantly, it wasn’t because of injury which means Hopkins is fresh and ready to contribute. For Arizona, it’s a badly needed boost to the offense. Marquise Brown, who took over as the WR1 in Hopkins’ absence, is now injured. Former second-round pick Rondale Moore looks like a bust and newly acquired Robbie Anderson is a total wild card. This all creates a perfect storm of opportunity for Hopkins to start notching up fantasy stats again. And for those concerned that age is catching up with him, his 13.6 yards-per-reception and eight touchdowns last year were his highest totals in those categories in four years. He’s good to go.

The Trade: Gerald Everett (TE – LAC) for Robert Tonyan (TE – GB)

The Reasoning: For the first two weeks of the 2022 season, Gerald Everett looked like the best tight end in fantasy not named Kelce or Andrews. He totaled 54 and 71 yards in Weeks 1 and 2 respectively and scored a touchdown while looking like a favorite target for Pro Bowler Justin Herbert. It’s been a little slower since then with just one game of more than 29 yards which happened to be the only other game he scored a touchdown. Nonetheless, TDs at the tight end position on your fantasy team can be few and far between and you need to take what you can get.

But while Everett’s production is seemingly descending, Robert Tonyan looks to be heating up. Tonyan’s been pretty invisible the first month of the season, failing to total more than 37 yards until a mini-breakout in Week 6 with 10 receptions for 90 yards on an impressive 12 targets.

Everett and the Chargers have the second-easiest strength of schedule in terms of tight end fantasy scoring, while Tonyan and the Packers check in at 22. But Tonyan has the advantage over Everett in terms of the pecking order in their respective offenses. For the Chargers, receivers Keenan Allen (when healthy) and Mike Williams will always come first. Austin Ekeler is also more likely to see targets out of the backfield. In Green Bay, with no more Davante Adams to hog all the targets, the priority for Aaron Rodgers in the passing game is wide-open.
