Quarterback and Tight End Streamers: Week 5

Quarterback and Tight End Streamers: Week 5

As the injuries continue to pile up, streaming players in fantasy football is becoming a more popular and successful strategy to follow. Last week my streamers of the week came through in a big way and hopefully played a significant role in helping you get the win. Deshaun Watson was owned in just 14 percent of all Yahoo leagues but ended up scoring a QB league-high 33.7 points. My TE streamer of the week, Cameron Brate, scored 18 fantasy points in PPR formats and finished as a top-three TE despite being owned in just 40 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Before we move forward with the top streamers of Week 5, here are the complete results from last week’s article:

Quarterback

  • Deshaun Watson – 283 Pass Yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT, 24 Rush Yards, 1 Rush TD = 33.7 FP
  • Jay Cutler – 164 Pass Yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 5 Rush Yards = 5.1 FP
  • Blake Bortles – 140 Pass Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 38 Rush Yards = 11.4 FP

Tight End

As we look ahead to Week 5, remember that in order to qualify for this list the selected players must be owned in no more than 40 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues.

Quarterback Streaming Options

QB Stream of the Week: Deshaun Watson (HOU) vs. Kansas City (34% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
The rookie quarterback headlines the QB streamers for a second consecutive week. How could I not after his ridiculous Week 4 performance? His ownership percentage will likely rise drastically during the week and I don’t anticipate him being dropped anytime soon, so pounce while you can! Watson’s rushing ability makes him a very intriguing fantasy option and gives him a surprisingly high floor for a rookie and of course top-notch upside like we saw this past weekend. Since taking over as the starter, the Houston signal-caller has scored 17 or more fantasy points in every game and has topped 20 points twice in three matchups. It is also worth noting that Watson is already a top 7 fantasy producer even though he’s played one less game than most of his peers. Don’t expect another 30+ point week against a tough Kansas City defense, but you can certainly bank on QB1 production in this game and moving forward.

Jared Goff (LAR) vs. Seattle (22% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
The Los Angeles offense has looked sharp under the guidance of their young head coach and offensive guru, Sean McVay. Meanwhile, Jared Goff has silenced critics from last season with his strong play through the first four games of 2017. The second-year quarterback has thrown for over 200 yards and at least one TD in every matchup and has totaled 15+ fantasy points in three of his four outings so far. Goff faces a stellar Seattle defense that has allowed fewer than 12 points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Even though the matchup isn’t ideal, Goff is still a decent streaming option because of his recent newfound success in McVay’s offense.

Josh McCown (NYJ) at Cleveland (2% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Going from two young faces in Watson and Goff to one of the more seasoned vets in the NFL. It hasn’t been pretty, but 38-year-old Josh McCown has the New York Jets sitting at 2-2, exceeding the early expectations of many. From a fantasy standpoint, McCown has been less than impressive, averaging just 11 points per game so far this season. However, he has also faced the top two passing defenses in the NFL so far in Buffalo and Jacksonville. In his other two outings, McCown was able to manage an average of 15 points per game. This week the veteran quarterback faces his easiest test yet, as he takes on the 29th ranked Browns pass defense that is allowing nearly 22 fantasy points per game to the QB position. I wouldn’t be excited starting him, but McCown is worth consideration if you are in desperate need of a QB this week.

Tight End Streaming Options

TE Stream of the Week: Benjamin Watson (BAL) at Oakland (24% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
I’ve been talking Charles Clay up all season and he is finally out of the 40 percent ownership range, so I’ll set my sights on the next guy in a nice situation to produce. That guy is Benjamin Watson. The first thing you need to look at when targeting tight ends is their number of targets and the situation they are in. First off, we know that Joe Flacco loves throwing to his tight ends, which was made evident when Dennis Pitta led all tight ends in receptions last season. Furthermore, the Ravens are lacking production in the receiving game, meaning there are more targets to go around and that someone needs to step up. Starting receivers Mike Wallace and Jeremy Maclin have combined for just 19 catches, while Benjamin Watson actually leads the team in receptions (16) and yardage (146). Fantasy wise, Watson has scored nine or more points in three straight games, providing some consistency to a position that has lacked in that area this season. Lastly, the veteran tight end could be a sneaky play versus an Oakland defense that has struggled in coverage versus opposing tight ends, currently ranking in the bottom 10 of the NFL in that department.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins (NYJ) at Cleveland (7% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
After sitting out the first two games due to suspension, Seferian-Jenkins has posted back-to-back weeks of eight or more points. Not earth-shattering numbers by any means but it could be enough to get you through a bye week or injury. We should also consider that his floor this week against the Browns. Cleveland has been flat out terrible at slowing down the tight end position, surrendering the second most yards (280) and touchdowns (4), in addition to the most receptions (30) in the process. Only the New York Giants have allowed more points to opposing tight ends.

Tyler Kroft (CIN) vs. Buffalo (1% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Kroft took full advantage of his opportunity filling in for the injured Tyler Eifert in Week 4. The 24-year-old caught six passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns against the previously mentioned Cleveland Browns. Having said that, production will be a lot more difficult to come by when the Bengals travel to Buffalo to face one of the top defenses in the league. With a mere one percent ownership, Kroft is likely available in your leagues and he already flashed massive upside that should result in more targets and trust from Andy Dalton moving forward. He’s not a safe play, but he’s worth a flier for those in need.
