Week 9 Sleeper Starts / Busts (Fantasy Football)

Week 9 Sleeper Starts / Busts (Fantasy Football)

The Jets have now won four games, Ezekiel Elliott can play another week, and we had an incredibly eventful NFL trade deadline. Suffice to say, this has been an interesting season to say the least. You’re not here for a weekly recap though and we reached out to our featured experts below to provide some forward-looking advice.

It’s too late to go back and sit Austin Seferian-Jenkins or LeSean McCoy, but there’s still time to get your Sunday/Monday picks correctly. The experts are identifying players that could provide value beyond their ranking as well as name players that may disappoint this week.

If you don’t see any of your players listed below, be sure to check out our Who Should I Start? tool. You can also import your team into My Playbook for instant advice specific to your team.

Q1. Give us a player outside of our top 100 Flex that represents a deep sleeper start and tell us why you think he has upside this week.

Eddie Lacy (RB – SEA): vs. WAS
“Before you just straight up laugh this off, hear me out. Eddie Lacy isn’t a bad flex play this week. The Seahawks have come to the realization that they cannot continue to go toe-to-toe with other top-tier teams without a run game, so they went out and traded for left tackle Duane Brown who specializes in both run and pass blocking. That obviously helps, but the big note here is that the Seahawks have come forward and said they’re going to have Lacy start this game and give him “a good run” to see what he can do. Against the Redskins who leak fantasy points, Lacy is a solid flex with bye weeks in full effect.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Brandon Coleman (WR – NO): vs. TB
“Coleman is an intriguing option this week with a great matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s been acting almost as a TE for the Saints because of his blocking ability and Fleener has been a non-factor, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he found the end zone. Coleman did lead the Saints WRs in snaps last week.”
– Matt Camp (Bleacher Report)

Andre Ellington (RB – ARI): at SF
“I have no problem starting Ellington this weekend, even if you aren’t desperate with bye week woes. The Cardinals’ third-down back has 18 receptions over his last two games and is expected to return from injury for this week’s contest against the 49ers. San Francisco is worst in the league against pass-catching backs, allowing 9.9 fantasy points per game just in running back receiving stats. Seeing that Adrian Peterson has just three receptions on the year, that bodes well for Ellington, who went for 104 yards earlier in the season against the 49ers.”
– Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros)

Adam Humphries (WR – TB): at NO
“He’s questionable to play, but Tampa Bay’s anything-but-dynamic receiver, Adam Humphries, is fully expected to start and carries a fair amount of upside with a satisfactory level of safety for a player outside the top 100. Against the Saints in week nine, offense should be on display and there’s no better match-up on the field than that of Humphries lining up in the slot against Kenny Vacarro and his 68% completion percentage. Through seven games, Humphries has averaged nearly six targets per game and I’m taking the over in week nine along with making the prediction that Humphries notches his first touchdown of the 2017 campaign. Be sure to check his injury status prior to the game to be safe.”

Q2. On the flip side, what player inside the top 40 Flex is likely to disappoint fantasy owners this week?

C.J. Anderson (RB – DEN): at PHI
“In one of my own personal leagues, I’m benching C.J. Anderson to play Javorius Allen. The Eagles have dominated with their front-seven, allowing just one running back to total more than 38 rushing yards. Keep in mind that was Kareem Hunt who finished with 81 yards and that includes a 53-yard run. Anderson may finish outside the top 40 running backs in Week 9, let alone the top 40 players.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Ameer Abdullah (RB – DET): at GB
“I’m having trouble buying into Ameer Abdullah. Even though the Packers provide a beatable matchup for Abdullah, he hasn’t run for more than 54 yards in any of the last three games and has just one rushing TD for the season. The Lions just can’t seem to get the most out of the talent they have in their backfield.”
– Matt Camp (Bleacher Report)

Alex Collins (RB – BAL): at TEN
“I’ve loved Alex Collins all season and have been pleading for him to get more touches. As it turns out, now that he finally saw 20 touches in a game last week, I am less eager to play him. This has a lot more to do with the opponent, however, as Tennessee has been shutting everyone not named Leonard Fournette down this season. More likely, the Ravens will see success in the passing game with Buck Allen, who already has 32 receptions on the season.”
– Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros)

Devonta Freeman (RB – ATL): at CAR
“Freeman isn’t usually a popular ‘sit’ play but he’s just that versus a stout Carolina run defense in week nine. Carolina hasn’t allowed more than 10 fantasy points in PPR formats since week four when both James White and Dion Lewis accomplished that feat. Since then, the Panthers have shut down Doug Martin, Tarik Cohen, Jordan Howard, LeGarrette Blount and Ameer Abdullah. Combine that with the fact that Freeman hasn’t eclipsed 12 fantasy points in the past three weeks along with Tevin Coleman now fully healthy and seeing greater snaps and the table is set for another disappointing week. Freeman is a tough ‘sit’ in any week given his potential, but his arrow is clearly pointing down in week nine.”
– Jeff Haverlack (Dynasty League Football)
