We are getting to the point in the MLB season where we see some changes in closer roles with some struggles. We’re also seeing some relievers step up with injuries. Here is a look at the current state of each bullpen as of April 21.
AL East
- Baltimore Orioles: Jorge Lopez
- Boston Red Sox: Jake Diekman
- New York Yankees: Aroldis Chapman
- Tampa Bay Rays: Andrew Kittredge
- Toronto Blue Jays: Jordan Romano
Lopez has recorded the two save opportunities out of the Orioles bullpen as of April 21. He has allowed two runs over seven innings across six appearances overall. Diekman, Hansel Robles, and Garrett Whitlock have one save out of the Red Sox bullpen. Whitlock usually has more of the long relief option and could slide into the starting rotation if an injury occurred. Chapman remains the relatively clear closer in the Yankees bullpen despite some struggles. He did record a couple of pretty easy saves in the Tigers series. Kittredge has two saves on the year out of the Rays bullpen, while Brooks Raley has notched one save with two holds and would likely be the next man up in the closer role. Romano leads the league with seven saves. He got into some trouble for the first time this season against the Red Sox this past Thursday but still held on for the save.
AL Central
- Chicago White Sox: Liam Hendriks
- Cleveland Guardians: Emmanuel Clase
- Detroit Tigers: Gregory Soto
- Kansas City Royals: Scott Barlow
- Minnesota Twins: Tyler Duffey
Hendriks continues to remain the clear closer in the White Sox bullpen. He has been a bit more efficient lately despite some early-season struggles. Kendall Graveman and Aaron Bummer have each commanded significant late-inning roles behind Hendricks. Graveman has recorded four holds this season and would likely be the next man up with closer experience in his own right. Clase has recorded the two saves out of the Guardians bullpen and remains the clear closer. It is a similar situation with Soto in Detroit. The Twins and Royals bullpens are interesting as they appear to be committees. In Kansas City, Barlow and Josh Staumont have split the late-inning role. It has been spread out in Minnesota between Duffey, Emilio Pagan, Joe Smith, and Jhoan Duran.
AL West
- Houston Astros: Hector Neris
- Los Angeles Angels: Raisel Iglesias
- Oakland Athletics: Dany Jimenez
- Seattle Mariners: Diego Castillo
- Texas Rangers: Joe Barlow
This division saw some of the primary closers placed on the injured list. Ryan Pressly, Lou Trivino, and Paul Sewald are all currently sidelined. Pressly and Trivino are expected to take back their closer roles when they were healthy, while Seattle was always more of a committee approach. While Sewald is sidelined, Castillo and Drew Steckenrider will likely split the late-inning work. It is expected to be a committee in Houston between Neris and Rafael Montero primarily. Ryne Stanek could also see some run in that role.
NL East
- Atlanta Braves: Kenley Jansen
- Miami Marlins: Anthony Bender
- New York Mets: Edwin Diaz
- Philadelphia Phillies: Corey Knebel
- Washington Nationals: Tanner Rainey
Bender has taken clear command of the Marlins’ closer role with both of Miami’s saves. There were some questions about who would be the Marlins’ closer while Dylan Floro was sidelined and if it would be a committee approach, but Bender has taken complete control of that role. Rainey has the three saves out of the Nationals bullpen. Behind him, Kyle Finnegan has recorded three holds, while Sean Doolittle, Steve Cishek, and Victor Arano have also recorded two holds leaving the next man up role behind Rainey up in the air. Jansen, Diaz, and Knebel all remain the clear closers in their respective bullpens.
NL Central
- Chicago Cubs: David Robertson
- Cincinnati Reds: Art Warren
- Milwaukee Brewers: Josh Hader
- Pittsburgh Pirates: David Bednar
- St. Louis Cardinals: Giovanny Gallegos
It remains a committee approach in the Pirates bullpen between Bednar and Chris Stratton. Bednar has looked better so far this season with six shutout innings. Wil Crowe has also recorded one save, pitching in a long relief situation. Robertson has recorded four of the possible five saves out of the Cubs bullpen. Mychal Givens recorded the other save to go along with two holds and would appear to be the next man up behind Robertson.
NL West
- Arizona Diamondbacks: Mark Melancon
- Colorado Rockies: Daniel Bard
- Los Angeles Dodgers: Craig Kimbrel
- San Diego Padres: Taylor Rogers
- San Francisco Giants: Camilo Doval
Rogers has dominated in the closer role out of the Padres bullpen. He has recorded five saves, allowing just one hit across five shutout innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. Bard has recorded five of the eight saves in the Rockies bullpen. Alex Colome would appear to be the next man up behind Bard with his one save and two holds. After struggling in his first appearance of the season, Doval has tossed 5.1 shutout innings across five appearances since. Jake McGee has two saves along with Doval, while Dominic Leone has one save and has also been utilized in late-inning situations.
