DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (5/15)

Welcome to this Monday’s addition of DraftKings value plays and happy belated Mother’s Day to all of you DFS moms out there. This Monday is unattractive…good for hitters and very lackluster in the pitching department.

If you play the all-day slate, you’ll want to target at least one pitcher from the 6:00 game, but I wouldn’t target any bats against either of them. Therefore, we’ll only discuss the seven-game main slate…let’s get to it.

Pitcher

Yovani Gallardo (SEA): $6,900 vs. OAK
Pretty much all of the pitching analysis on this slate will be like putting lipstick on pigs. That being said, Gallardo (-113) is coming off a bad outing, but his best appearance of the year was against this same A’s club on April 23 in which he put up 27.3 DK points.

He’s pitching a bit under his 3.76 FIP, so he’s due for a good outing. Oakland still strikes out at a 23% clip, and they don’t have many threatening bats outside of Khris Davis.

Jesse Chavez (LAA): $7,800 vs. CWS
Chavez (-168) might be the safest option tonight, which is gross. But, with this slate, he’s probably a guy you use in cash games tonight considering the White Sox are terrible against right-handed pitching and the ever-present West Coast marine layer to help limit the run total in Anaheim, and it’s a good start. Let the ChiSox team wRC+ of 86 tell you the rest.

Below, both guys face teams that strike out over 24% of the time in a pitchers park. You could use either guy, but I like Anderson a bit more than Perdomo here which is the opposite of Vegas, currently listing Anderson as a -119 road dog.

Other Notables

Catcher

Brian McCann (HOU): $3,200 @ MIA
Due to the limited options tonight, catcher is a position that you’ll likely have to spend up at or simply go to the lowest “green checkmark” once lineups come out. McCann gets righty Dan Straily and his completely unsustainable 5.3% HR/FB ratio.

His outlier 14 strikeout performance against San Diego is skewing all of his numbers, and there’s a good chance he gets hit hard by a hot Astros squad. Look for Straily to come back to earth and McCann to get in on the action.

Other Notables

First Base

Kendrys Morales (TOR): $3,600 vs. ATL
Morales carries a career .206 ISO, .117 wRC+ & .346 wOBA against right-handed pitching. His splits are favorable considering he gets the shell of Bartolo Colon tonight. While he’s not getting on base as much as he usually does, his power numbers are decent, and that gives him the edge over Danny Valencia today for $300 more. If you have an additional $300, you could also look at teammate Justin Smoak as well as Colon is serving up batting practice lately.

Other Notables

Second Base

Chris Taylor (LAD): $3,300 @ SF
Taylor has never been one to hit RHP very well. So far in 2017 however, he’s raking against them with a career high 41% hard contact rate and a third of his fly balls going over the fence. He’s slugging .511 and boasts an impressive .244 ISO, .383 wOBA & 139 wRC+ to start this year.

He’s also the reason you do not see Chase Utley crack the starting lineup. If he’s in the top half of the order, you can be comfortable playing him at this price.

Other Notables

  • Yolmer Sanchez (CWS) $2,300 @ LAA  (GPP punt special)

Third Base

Luis Valbuena (LAA): $3,500 vs CWS
Since 2014, Valbuena has been a destroyer of right-handed pitching to the tune of a .218 ISO, .127 wRC+ & .351 wOBA. His robust splits pair nicely with the gas can known as Mike Pelfrey. This is an easy value if you need a cheap corner infielder as he also carries first base eligibility. There are a handful of solid 1B Plays today, so he’s best served at the hot corner, but play him wherever you need the savings.

Other Notables

Shortstop

Hernan Perez (MIL): $3,500 @ SD
Perez has filled in at left field for the injured Ryan Braun since the All-Star went down, and he’s played excellently. He’s been batting third recently, which is fantastic for getting his reverse splits.

This season, he’s smacking around opposing righties with a .278 ISO, .373 wOBA & 125 wRC+…not bad for “utility” player. He’s making it hard for the Brew Crew to keep him on the bench, you should slot him at SS  and take full advantage of his dual eligibility.

Other Notables

Outfield

Marwin Gonzalez & Josh Reddick (HOU): $3,400 each @ MIA
Gonzalez is crushing! His current nine-game hit streak features three multi-hit efforts, and he’s gone deep six times in the last two weeks. If he’s in the lineup, which he deserves to be, feel good plugging him in here, or at 3B. How hot has he been?

How about a .358 ISO, .419 wOBA & 175 wRC+. It doesn’t matter, righty or southpaw, even with a lower BABIP than his AVG, play him while he’s on fire.

Reddick has been hitting in the two hole when facing RHP this season and tonight should be more of the same. The Astros are my favorite stack tonight as they’re currently running hot and as I mentioned previously, are in a good spot to bring Dan Straily back to the mean, regression style. “J.R.” is outperforming his career ISO, wOBA, and wRC+ this season with marks of .227/.376/145. You should include him in your Astros stacks with “MarGon” as well.

Ben Revere (LAA): $3,200 vs. CWS
Revere hit leadoff Sunday and should today as well; I like his chances to not only get on base but to be driven in a couple of times as well with his speed. Anaheim draws Mike Pelfrey tonight, and that’s just what they need to get their offense rolling as Pelfrey’s picture is under the definition of flammable in the baseball dictionary. Revere hit a dong last week, so he’s not likely to do so again until 2018, but he’s rebounding nicely from a slow start and cheap enough in a plus matchup along with other Halos.
