Thursday Night Football

No House Advantage offers three options for their Pick ‘Ems contest on Thursday Nights. Entry fees range from $5 to $20. The following prop bet picks apply to all three contests.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs – 8:15 PM EST – Amazon Prime

Austin Ekeler (RB – LAC)

O/U 4.5 Receptions

Los Angeles’ RB Austin Ekeler was a disappointment last week against the Las Vegas Raiders, having only 14 carries and four catches for a total of 72 yards and no touchdowns. He should rebound in Week 2, especially with WR Keenan Allen likely sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Chargers face a Kansas City defense that allowed Arizona RB James Conner to have a solid day, with five catches on six targets. I expect Ekeler to have similar results. I like the over on this prop as a top-priority play this week.

Jerick McKinnon (RB – KC)

 O/U 14.5 Receiving Yards

It looks like Chiefs’ RB Jerick McKinnon has finally earned a consistent role in the Kansas City offense. In Week 1, he saw 27 snaps, the same as fellow RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. QB Patrick Mahomes threw his way four times, which McKinnon turned into three catches for 27 yards. The Chiefs are up against a stout Chargers run defense this week and should keep the ball in the air often. McKinnon will see at least four targets and should easily eclipse the 14.5 yards needed to hit the over on this prop as a mid-priority play in Week 2.

Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC)

O/U 0.5 Interceptions

There were a lot of questions this offseason about how Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes would handle the loss of his safety blanket, WR Tyreek Hill. He responded in Week 1 by being nearly perfect against the Arizona Cardinals. Chances are high that he will turn in another stellar performance in Week 2, but he is facing a much better secondary in Los Angeles than he had to deal with last week. The Chargers forced Raiders’ QB Derek Carr, who only threw 14 picks all of last season, into four of them on Sunday. Mahomes had 13 last season, and I expect there will be one errant ball this talented defensive group will turn into an interception. So I’m taking this prop bet as a low-priority pick this week.

Gerald Everett (TE – LAC)

O/U 3.5 Receptions

As previously mentioned, the Chargers are heading into this Thursday Night Football matchup without WR Keenan Allen. That might tempt you to take the over on this prop bet for TE Gerald Everett, but don’t fall for the trap. Last week against the Cardinals, the Kansas City defense held talented Cardinals TE Zach Ertz to two catches on four targets. Everett only had three catches last week against a Raiders defense that isn’t nearly as tough against TEs. This is an easy top priority under prop bet this week.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB – KC)

O/U 54.5 Rushing Yards

Week 1 gave hope to fans of divisive Chiefs’ RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Finally, he looked like the player he was expected to be when the team drafted him in 2020; a talented pass-catching back with some rushing upside. While he impressed against Arizona, catching all three targets for 32 yards and two touchdowns, he only received seven carries for 42 yards. The Chargers’ run defense held the Raiders backfield to a total of 64 yards on the ground. Between that and rookie RB Isiah Pacheco getting the majority of carries in Kansas City last week, this is a smash high-priority under for CEH on 54.5 rushing yards.

Mike Williams (WR – LAC)

O/U 4.5 Receptions

For the final time, Chargers’ WR Keenan Allen is likely out this Thursday night with a hamstring injury. Are you sensing a theme here? Allen is the undisputed WR1 in the L.A. offense, and losing him for the week is a hit to this team. However, this opens up an opportunity for WR Mike Williams to bounce back from a disappointing Week 1 performance. Seeing him only receive two targets despite a 93% snap share against the Raiders was baffling. However, there’s no reason to be concerned, especially this week. Williams saw 129 targets last season, and with him likely to be QB Justin Herbert‘s WR1 against Kansas City, a five-plus catch day is in the cards. I’m playing this prop bet as a high-priority over with confidence.
