Fantasy Football Injury Report: Week 1

Welcome to the dreaded injury report. Professional football is a violent game, and your fantasy players are going to miss time because of it. Hopefully, you don’t have many names on this list.

Devonta Freeman (RB – ATL)
This one is from Thursday but is worth mentioning. Devonta Freeman injured his knee at an unknown point during the Falcons’ loss to the Eagles. He said after the game he was “fine,” but so did Derrius Guice after he tore his ACL, so take that with a grain of salt. If Freeman can’t go, Tevin Coleman is an RB1.

Leonard Fournette (RB – JAX)
The second-year star was in for a huge workload before pulling up lame with a hamstring strain. Reports are that Leonard Fournette’s injury is not serious, but hamstrings are always tricky. I would say there is virtually no shot Fournette plays this week, but the team has expressed optimism. If he doesn’t play, it would make T.J. Yeldon a must-add in all formats.

DeSean Jackson (WR – TB)
The veteran speedster had himself a day before exiting with a concussion. DeSean Jackson will have a week to clear the concussion protocol. If he cannot, Chris Godwin is the immediate beneficiary.

Marquise Goodwin (WR – SF)
Marquise Goodwin took a shot to the quad early in the game. He tried to return in the second half but lasted just a handful of plays before departing for the remainder of the game. A contusion isn’t overly serious so Goodwin certainly has a chance to play this week. We may not have any clarity on this before Friday at the earliest, though. Dante Pettis would be the biggest beneficiary.

Doug Baldwin (WR – SEA)
After missing the entire preseason with a mysterious left knee injury, Doug Baldwin sprained his MCL in his right knee on Sunday. He now has zero working knees. The Seahawks’ receiving corps is in such dire straits that something called a Will Dissly was the Seahawks best pass catcher against the Broncos. Tyler Lockett would become the WR1 with Brandon Marshall somehow actually mattering.

Greg Olsen (TE – CAR)
Greg Olsen reinjured his foot for the third time over the past year and this really could mark the end of his career. Olsen was in a walking boot and crutches after the game. He very well may have rebroken it. For a guy getting up there in age that almost had the job that ultimately went to Jason Witten, an 8+ week injury would justify dropping Olsen. Ian Thomas is the backup, but I wouldn’t go rushing to pick him up.

Marcus Mariota (QB – TEN)
In without a doubt one of the strangest games you’ll ever see, Marcus Mariota exited the over seven-hour affair with the Dolphins shortly after a return from a second lightning delay due to an elbow injury. He wasn’t playing particularly well before the injury anyway. With Blaine Gabbert under center, it would still be a massive downgrade for all Titans.

Delanie Walker (TE – TEN)
Delanie Walker’s season ended in ugly fashion when his ankle was dislocated and his leg fractured as a result. Unfortunately, the show must go on. Jonnu Smith is a must-add if you are in need of a TE.

Aaron Rodgers (QB – GB)
The best QB in the league put on a heroic performance in his second-half comeback to defeat the Bears, but he was clearly nowhere near 100%. Aaron Rodgers could barely step into his throws as he was pretty much using all arm strength to carry his team to victory. It looked like an MCL sprain for Rodgers – definitely something with his left knee. I don’t think he is a lock to play this week. As we saw with Deshone Kizer’s version of “Arrive. Raise Hell. Leave.” It will be an unmitigated disaster if he has to make any starts. Let’s hope Rodgers can play through this injury. 60% of Rodgers is better than 100% of Kizer.
