Fantasy Football Mock Draft: 12-Team, Half-PPR, Middle Pick (2021)

Can you smell it? No, I don’t mean the summertime smells of fresh-cut grass and smoked meats. I’m talking about draft season!

Okay, I don’t really know what draft season smells like. The point is it’s almost here. And that means mock draft season’s in full swing!

Whether you’re deciding where you want to pick in your upcoming draft, or already know your fate, I’ll give you a general idea of what to expect when picking in the middle of your fantasy draft. Here’s how it played out! By the way, you can do this too using our amazing DraftWizard!

Note: I assigned myself the 6th pick in a 12-team, half-PPR, 1 QB mock draft.

Pick 1.6: Saquon Barkley (RB – NYG)

The first four picks were tailbacks, but Tyreek Hill surprisingly went fifth overall, allowing Barkley to fall to me. I admit I was tempted to take Jonathan Taylor. But I opted to go with Barkley because he’s a proven stud when healthy.

Pick 2.7: Joe Mixon (RB – CIN)

There were a ton of enticing options here, including Antonio Gibson, D.K. Metcalf and Justin Jefferson. But with the huge dropoff at running back, I wanted to get a strong duo. I’m still a believer in Mixon despite how much of a headache he’s been for fantasy players. His talent has always been real. Now I’m just hoping Cincinnati’s offense can give him a chance to succeed. I’m taking one more plunge.

Pick 3.6: J.K. Dobbins (RB – BAL)

Mock drafts are about experimentation, and that’s what I’m doing here by taking another tailback. The top receivers on the board were Allen Robinson and Terry McLaurin. While I like both guys, there are plenty of good receivers still available.

Meanwhile, I don’t see many other tailbacks with as much upside as Dobbins, and as my RB3, there’s even less pressure on him to be a stud. Dobbins is an all-around back who could have a huge year in Baltimore.

One of the benefits of picking in the middle of your draft is you’re less exposed to a big positional run. I’m banking on that being the case with this pick.

Pick 4.7: Chris Godwin (WR – TB)

Last season, many fantasy players took Godwin as their WR1. Injuries held him back last season, but he’s still got weekly WR1 upside in Tampa’s offense. He’ll be just fine as my top pass catcher.

Pick 5.6: Kenny Golladay (WR – NYG)

I’m a huge fan of Golladay’s talent and am hoping his injury-plagued 2020 season was more a fluke than a sign of regression. He’ll serve as a solid WR2.

Pick 6.7: Ja’Marr Chase (WR – CIN)

It’s time to add some upside to this receiving group, and is there a better upside option than the top receiver in this year’s draft class? Many view Chase as one of the best receiving prospects we’ve seen in years, and I’m banking on him putting up a Justin Jefferson type of rookie season.

Despite waiting until Round 4 to take a pass catcher, I think I’ve assembled a pretty solid receiving trio.

Pick 7.6: Damien Harris (RB – NE)

Harris doesn’t wow me from a talent standpoint. And trusting a New England running back is always playing with fire. But Harris was decent when given the opportunity as the starter, and he should be the lead back in New England, for whatever that’s worth.

Pick 8.7: Gus Edwards (RB – BAL)

I’m pretty happy to lock up the Baltimore backfield here. Edwards will likely be a factor near the goal line. And if Dobbins misses time, he’ll be the next man up. This is a good backfield to roster.

Pick 9.6: Joe Burrow (QB – CIN)

I wasn’t planning to take a quarterback here. But Michael Pittman Jr. was sadly taken one pick before mine, and the tailback options were gross. So I took Burrow, who, if healthy, could be in store for a massive sophomore season. Pairing him with Chase also could pay off big dividends. I’ll likely draft a backup for Burrow just to be safe.

Pick 10.7: Ryan Tannehill (QB – TEN)

I’m pretty surprised Tannehill lasted after I took Burrow, so I’m scooping him up here to be my co-starter with Burrow. With Julio Jones and A.J. Brown, Tennessee’s passing game should be awesome.

Pick 11.6: Irv Smith Jr. (TE – MIN)

This late in drafts, I’m just seeking upside at tight end. Smith will be the full-time starter with Kyle Rudolph out of town, and he showed some flashes when given more opportunities last season. He’s worth a flyer.

Pick 12.7: Kenneth Gainwell (RB – PHI)

I’m taking a shot on Gainwell here for a couple of reasons. The first is he was handpicked by this new coaching staff. The second is I’m not sure Miles Sanders is any good. Gainwell could factor into the backfield equation early on, and it wouldn’t stun me if he finished 2021 as the team’s starter.

Pick 13.7: Rashod Bateman (WR – BAL)

With my final pick, I’m shooting for an upside flyer at receiver, my thinnest position. Bateman has the talent to finally fill Baltimore’s need for a true No. 1 receiver.

Final Draft Grade: 86/100 (B)

The DraftWizard gave me a solid grade, but I think my team has more upside than it’s given credit for. I love my starting lineup and think I’ve got enough at receiver to make this team work. If Burrow and Smith take big steps forward, this team could be legitimate.
