Quick Grades (2020 Fantasy Football Draft Advice – July)

Joe Mixon might just run wild on the league this season

We now have less than six weeks until the first NFL preseason game. So while we still have some time to make our final decisions, it is never too early to begin diving into the research.  I started the Quick Grades articles last year for those who would love to sit down and read a detailed start/sit article for 90 minutes every week but just can’t carve out the time at this stage in their lives. Instead, I give all of the information without any of the words. I’ll be doing that again here today and twice in August for your fantasy drafts.

Here is how it works: it’s quick-hitting advice with an overall draft grade for every fantasy-relevant player based on six simple criteria: Fantasy Ability, Surrounding Talent, Expected Volume, Upside, Risk and Streamer Usefulness. Each position weights these criteria differently, as volume is much more important for running backs than talent, for instance. Surrounding talent is much more important for pass catchers than other positions. Meanwhile, many will be streaming quarterbacks if they don’t land one of the top seven options. Let me explain each briefly.

Fantasy Ability (F. Ability)
If Allen Robinson had an elite quarterback passing him the ball, we’d be talking about him as one of the premier fantasy wideouts.

Surrounding Talent (S. Talent)
Jonathan Taylor just happened to land behind the best offensive line in all of football.

Expected Volume (X. Volume)
Tom Brady is a superior real-life quarterback to Josh Allen, but QBs who can run are a fantasy cheat code.

Upside
In the very best case scenario for Latavius Murray‘s fantasy stock (Kamara gets injured), just how great would he be for your fantasy team?

Risk
The likelihood, whether through injury, limited snaps or becoming an out-right bust that this player becomes unstartable.

Streamer
Tyrod Taylor will be ranked among the top 15 quarterbacks in each of the first four weeks just based on matchup alone.

D/ST Only Grades

  • Talent – All matchups and game scripts equal, which teams have the most skill for acquiring fantasy points?
  • Game Scripts – Playing ahead equals more sacks and INT opportunities
  • Week 1  – 75% of fantasy teams should be streaming D/ST every week
  • Week 2 – If a D/ST doesn’t have a good matchup in Weeks 1 or 2, why even draft them?

ADP
FantasyPros’ ADP draws from a consensus of sites

Bobby Round
What my rankings suggest the players are worth. You won’t need to reach five rounds above ADP for players like Tony Pollard, though, as you can get him later.

Grade
All of the numbers formatted into an easily digestible A through F grading system with 97 and above being an A+, 93-96.9 being an A, 90-92.9 being an A- and so forth.

Value
Compares my draft grade to ADP to spit out values and reaches.

These recommendations are for 12-team half-PPR, 1-QB leagues. Slight adjustments would be made for moderate rules changes. Additionally, I’ll name a favorite target, best value and hard pass or two for each position. Obviously the #1 player from each position is the top target so rather, ‘favorite target’ refers to a player I expect to draft to all of my teams no matter what draft pick I end up with. Likewise, my ‘Hard Pass’ for each position is a player I may like just fine but not when considering his ADP. All value selections will be for players going beyond the top 100 picks in drafts.

Because the tables are a screenshot of an excel table, I’ve added a quick search/find list at the bottom of the article in case you are looking for one or two immediate grades. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me on Twitter @BobbyFantasyPro.

Running Backs

Wide Receivers

Quarterbacks

Tight Ends

D/ST

    • Favorite Target: Eagles D/ST
    • Best Value: Just draft the Eagles, folks
    • Hard Pass: San Fran or any D/ST before the last round
